This Coin-Operated Radio Was Like a Vending Machine For Your Ears

Back in the 1920s, it seemed everything was becoming coin-operated. All over the U.S., you could find coin-operated weighing machines at railroad stations; coin-operated vending machines were chock full of candy, cigarettes and other tasty treats; and the automatic coin-operated shoe shine machine was even threatening to put its flesh-and-blood counterpart out of a job. A 1926 issue of Radio News magazine called dropping coins in a slot the great American past-time. But unlike the candy vending machine or even weighing machines, there's one Jazz Age coin contraption that you'd be hard pressed to find today: the coin-operated radio.

Steve Case's Revolution Ventures Raising $150M For New Early-Stage VC Fund

Revolution Ventures, the early stage technology-focused venture capital arm of Revolution LLC, the investment firm headed up by AOL founder Steve Case, is looking to raise $150 million for its second fund, according to a new regulatory filing issued today with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The filing indicates that the new fund will be called "Revolution Ventures II" and that no money has yet been committed to the raise. However, a report published this morning in the Wall Street Journal cites "a source familiar" to the fundraising who says that the new fund "has attracted around $125 million in commitments so far" and is expected to close later this year.

Manufacturing rebounds in June, but hiring slows, survey shows

Manufacturing activity grew in June, rebounding from an unexpected contraction the prior month, but hiring in the sector was the weakest in nearly four years, an industry report showed on Monday.

The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) said its index of national factory activity in June rose to 50.9 from 49.0 in May, a touch above of expectations of 50.5. A reading above 50 indicates expansion in the sector.

The gauge for new orders rose to 51.9 from 48.8, while production jumped to 53.4 from 48.6, helping the overall index bounce back from May's contraction - the first in six months.

But a measure of employment fell to 48.7, the lowest reading since September of 2009. It stood at 50.1 in May.

That could feed concern about the strength of the U.S. recovery, particularly now that the Federal Reserve has said it is considering scaling back its massive stimulus program.

Economists polled by Reuters expect the broader U.S. economy to have slowed to 1.7 percent in the second quarter, though most say it should pick up steam in the second half.

The economy grew at a 1.8 percent rate in the first three months of the year, with consumer spending having grown less than initially thought.

'The Bible' sequel is coming to NBC

Hallelujah! Fans of spring's wildly popular History miniseries "The Bible" are about to get more of the project. The sequel, tentatively titled "A.D.: Beyond the Bible," is coming to NBC, the network announced Monday.

"I followed the development process of 'The Bible' closely with (executive producer) Mark (Burnett) and knew that the story was far from over after Christ's crucifixion," Bob Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment, said in a statement. "In fact, what happened in the aftermath -- which is essentially the beginning of Christianity -- is utterly fascinating. The day after 'The Bible' premiered, I told Mark we were on board with no hesitation for the follow-up miniseries."

"Our new series, 'A.D.: Beyond the Bible,' is another massive project and a major commitment, but it's a story that has to be told," Burnett and his wife and executive producer, Roma Downey, said in a statement. "It's a story that changed the world. We look forward to making this an enormous television event on NBC."

According to NBC, "Beyond the Bible" will kick off "in the dark days after Jesus' betrayal and death," and will follow his disciples' "stand against the combined might of Rome and their own local authorities."

"The Bible" premiered in March to 13.1 million viewers, according to Nielsen. NBC has not yet revealed an air date for the sequel.
