Romney: Obama going in "wrong direction" on China (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Mitt Romney lashed out at what he called President Barack Obama's weak policy on China, criticizing it on Thursday for going in "precisely the wrong direction" and calling meetings this week with China's vice president "empty pomp and ceremony."

In an editorial in the Wall Street Journal, the Republican presidential candidate chided Obama for taking too long to address the Asian powerhouse and said he would change course if elected by preserving a military presence in the region and confronting human rights issues.

"President Obama came into office as a near supplicant to Beijing, almost begging it to continue buying American debt so as to finance his profligate spending here at home ... Such weakness has only encouraged Chinese assertiveness and made our allies question our staying power in East Asia," the former Massachusetts governor wrote.

"Now, three years into his term, the president has belatedly responded with a much-ballyhooed 'pivot' to Asia, a phrase that may prove to be as gimmicky and vacuous as his 'reset' with Russia," he said, adding that "the supposed pivot has been oversold" and was "also vastly under-resourced."

"We must change course," said Romney, who is vying for the Republican nomination to face Democrat Obama in the November 6 election.

Romney's comments come as China's Vice President Xi Jinping visits the United States this week to urge greater cooperation between Beijing and Washington. During the trip Obama and other administration officials pressed China to improve its human rights record and play by the rules of the world economy.

Such a stance aims to appeal to U.S. voters in an election year during which voters in battleground states have suffered job losses as their work moved to other countries, including China.

On Wednesday, one day after meeting with Xi at the White House, Obama continued his attack on Chinese trade practices and called for manufacturing jobs to move back to the United States.

Obama chided competitors for not playing "by the same rules" at a campaign-style visit at Master Lock's Milwaukee, Wisconsin,

factory and pointed to his creation of a Trade Enforcement Unit to investigate unfair trade practices in China and other countries.

But Romney said in the newspaper piece he would take a different tack, calling for direct action to counter "abusive Chinese practices in the areas of trade, intellectual property, and currency valuation."

Romney, who is running in large part on his experience as a business executive, has made tough talk on China a centerpiece of his campaign's economic message and last week criticized China's "authoritarianism" during an address to an audience of technology executives.

"Unless China changes its ways, on day one of my presidency I will designate it a currency manipulator and take appropriate counteraction. A trade war with China is the last thing I want, but I cannot tolerate our current trade surrender," he wrote on Thursday.

He also called for reversing defense cuts and maintaining a strong military presence in the Pacific to balance "the long-term challenge posed by China's build-up."

"This is not an invitation to conflict. Instead, this policy is a guarantee that the region remains open for cooperative trade, and that economic opportunity and democratic freedom continue to flourish across East Asia," he wrote.

On the issue of human rights, Romney wrote: "We must also forthrightly confront the fact that the Chinese government continues to deny its people basic political freedoms and human rights."

Unique testbed soon will be in space

ScienceDaily (Feb. 13, 2012) ? New and improved ways for future space travelers to communicate will be tested on the International Space Station after a launch later this year from Japan. The SCaN Testbed, or Space Communications and Navigation Testbed, was designed and built at NASA's Glenn Research Center over the last three years.

The SCaN Testbed will provide an orbiting laboratory on space station for the development of Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology. These systems will allow researchers to conduct a suite of experiments over the next several years, enabling the advancement of a new generation of space communications.

The testbed will be the first space hardware to provide an experimental laboratory to demonstrate many new capabilities, including new communications, networking and navigation techniques that utilize Software Defined Radio technology. The SCaN Testbed includes three such radio devices, each with different capabilities. These devices will be used by researchers to advance this technology over the Testbed's five year planned life in orbit.

"A Software Defined Radio is purposely reconfigured during its lifetime, which makes it unique," says Diane Cifani Malarik, project manager for the SCaN Testbed. This is made possible by software changes that are sent to the device, allowing scientists to use it for a multitude of functions, some of which might not be known before launch. Traditional radio devices cannot be upgraded after launch.

By developing these devices, future space missions will be able to return more scientific information, because new software loads can add new functions or accommodate changing mission needs. New software loads can change the radio's behavior to allow communication with later missions that may use different signals or data formats.

The SCaN Testbed is a complex space laboratory, composed of three SDRs, each with unique capabilities aimed at advancing different aspects of the technology. Two SDRs were developed under cooperative agreements with General Dynamics and Harris Corp., and the third was developed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, Calif. JPL also provided the five-antenna system on the exterior of the testbed, used to communicate with NASA's orbiting communications relay satellites and NASA ground stations across the United States.

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., developed communications software that resides on the JPL SDR.

Glenn led the design, development, integration, test and evaluation effort and provided all the facilities needed to fabricate, assemble and test the SCaN Testbed, including a flight machine shop, large thermal/vacuum chamber, electromagnetic interference testing with reverberant capabilities, a large clean room and multiple antenna ranges, including one inside the clean room.

Glenn also will be the hub of mission operations for the SCaN Testbed, with high-speed ties to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Ala., for real-time command and telemetry interfaces with space station. NASA Johnson Space Center's White Sands Test Facility, Las Cruces, N.M., and Goddard's Wallops Flight Facility, Wallops Island, Va., will provide Space Network and Near Earth Network communications.

The SCaN Testbed will launch to space station on Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency's H-IIB Transfer Vehicle (HTV-3) and be installed by extravehicular robotics to the ExPRESS Logistics Carrier-3 on the exterior truss of space station.

The SCaN Testbed will join other NASA network components to help build capabilities for a new generation of space communications for human exploration.

Lucille Ball stars in "I Love Lucy" Facebook game (Reuters)

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA (Reuters) ? Although, technically speaking, Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance and William Frawley never left small screens thanks to 60 years of "I Love Lucy," in TV reruns, the gang is back for their first interactive adventure in "Retro World."

"I Love Lucy," from maker Entertainment Games, enters the videogame space in early March as an episodic series available on Facebook and RetroWorld.com with mobile and tablet versions to follow.

The black-and-white game will blend footage from one of the most popular TV comedies of all time with new character interaction, exploration, puzzles and mini-games.

The first installment expands on the classic "Job Switching" episode in which the girls, Lucy Ricardo (Ball) and Ethel Mertz (Vance), go to work while their husbands Ricky (Ricardo) and Fred (Frawley) stay home and take care of the house. In the game, the players control Lucy and Ricky.

"The experience is uniquely designed to feel like you're playing in an actual 'I Love Lucy' episode," said Gene Mauro, President of Entertainment Games.

"In some scenes, players will control Lucy as she struggles comically to stay employed alongside Ethel in the chocolate factory; in other scenes, players become Ricky as he coaches Fred and labors to learn the ropes of basic housekeeping."

Entertainment Games has worked closely with producers Desilu, Too, LLC and CBS Consumer Products Inc., which control rights to products from the classic TV show that first aired from 1951 - 1957, on the game, turning the program's comedy into casual games designed to appeal to the boomer generation.

According to Bruce Bronn, owner of Unforgettable Enterprises, Inc., which represents Desilu/CBS, the show remains popular today with nearly 1 million Facebook likes and mainstream consumer awareness.

"Recent research data obtained by CBS shows 'Lucy' still enjoys an 88 percent awareness factor with 96 percent favorable appeal among the key female 18-54 age group and a 92 percent awareness with 95 percent favorable appeal for females 25-54," said Bronn.

GAMES THAT GO RETRO

Since launching its initial game in November 2011, the company has attracted over 60,000 players to its games like the '60s era spy game "Owl Files" and the '60s era comedy "Kat the Brat." Mauro said "Retro World" gamers are currently attracting mostly women with over 50 percent in the 40-plus age group.

The game makers have been using Facebook to test core gameplay in preparation for the "I Love Lucy" launch, which will mark the initial marketing push for the casual gaming company.

"They have an original idea, and think that iconic branded entertainment will have a lot of appeal, especially among the older Facebook users who remember brands like 'I Love Lucy,'" said Michael Pachter, videogame analyst, Wedbush Morgan Securities. "The unique nature of Entertainment Games' focus on nostalgia could build them a sizeable audience."

New "I Love Lucy" game episodes will be released every few months. Once they finish the first episode, players gain access to a Lucille Ball avatar that they can use to explore the rest of the game world. Ball joins fellow Hollywood icons like Dick Clark, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and John Belushi who already have avatars in the virtual game world.

Mauro said that from "Retro World's" initial inception, the company envisioned working with media companies to bring iconic forms of entertainment already ingrained in people's memories to life through this game platform.

Unlike Zynga, which has 227 million monthly active users across all age groups playing its casual games like "CityVille" and "Hidden Chronicles," Entertainment Games is focusing on the 150 million members of the baby boomer generation who are active on Facebook.

Entertainment Games plans to launch an additional four game franchises this year based on classic CBS TV shows from the '50s, '60s, '70s and '80s. Pachter believes that if Entertainment Games can get other big retro licenses like CBS' "The Brady Bunch" it can build a pretty interesting business.

For now, "I Love Lucy" fans will have more than just re-runs on Netflix or TVLand to enjoy.

Valentine's Day ? In The News?

As Valentine?s Day is fast approaching, I thought it important to discuss the characteristics of healthy relationships. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), intimate partner violence results in an estimated 1,200 deaths and 2 million injuries among women and nearly 600,000 injuries among men annually. Twenty-three percent of women and eleven percent of men aged 18 years or more have a lifetime history of intimate partner violence victimization. Prevention is key in domestic violence.? With that understanding, this post discusses the characteristics of healthy relationship.

Characteristics of Healthy Romantic Relationships:

- Partnership: There is shared responsibility.

- Economic Equality: Freedom exists related to issues of work, school, and money.

- Emotional Honesty: Both parties feel safe to share fears and insecurities.

- Sexual Respect: Accepts that ?no? means ?no?.

- Physical Safety: Respects partner?s space and discusses issues without violence.

- Supportive/Trusting: Listens and understands, values partner?s opinion, and sensitive to other?s needs.

Characteristics of Abusive Relationships:

- Domination: Abuser decides. Servant-Master relationship.

- Economic Control: Withholds money.

- Emotional Manipulation: Uses jealousy, passion, and stress to justify actions.

- Sexual Abuse: Treats partners as sex object.

- Physical Abuse: Hit, choke, kick, punch, pull hair, twist arms, trip, bite.

- Controlling: Isolates partner from friends.

- Intimidating: Charming in public but menacing in private.

The abusive behaviors listed above are not comprehensive. The information should simply serve as a brief overview and to encourage the reader to seek more information. For further information on the topic of domestic violence, there are many websites that can provide comprehensive information on this topic including but not limited to: www.thehotline.org; and www.ncadv.org.

Alternatives to university due to rising tuition fees - Education ...

With the recent announcement that tuition fees are set to rocket to around ?9,000 per year of study it would be wise for prospective A-level students to explore all options to obtain their chosen career.

An increasing number of firms are offering apprenticeships for people to train as they work. Traditionally, these schemes were offered in manual careers such as plumbing and electrics. However, there has been a steady rise in companies such as law firms and large businesses offering candidates the opportunity to study whilst they work for the company.

The advantages of these schemes are that they offer successful candidates the chance to qualify in their chosen career debt free as they will be working the whole time they are studying or training. There is a disadvantage as there will be many different people all competing for the same roles and there will unfortunately not be enough to go around.

This is because there are a rising number of school leavers who will be looking for these types of schemes, as well as a number of university educated people that are yet to find jobs due to the recession.

Sponsored degrees are also on offer where students go through a selection process for companies and the company then pays for the student?s degree. In return, the student works for the company in the holidays and has the chance of getting a job with the company at the end of their degree.

Home learning offers an alternative option to obtain qualifications that will equip you for your chosen career. It enables prospective students to work to fund their studies and they have the flexibility of studying in their own time.

The cost of home learning is a fraction of what a degree studied fulltime at university would cost, making home learning a sensible choice as you can work at the same time to fund the cost and can pay in instalments.

Often, students will not live near to universities or the courses offered in nearby universities will not be for them; which means they may have to move away from home, causing more expense. However, with home learning this will not be necessary as all studying is done from home using the internet.

There are a number of options available for further education and it is important to not rush into a decision as university may not be the only way into your chosen profession. Seek advice from as many people as possible and research all the possible ways you can carry out your study or training.

Distance From Floor For Subpanel? - Electrical - DIY Chatroom - DIY ...

I kinda thought about that, but I don't like the idea of trying to play with all that stuff myself. Then if the wires that are in there already end up being too short, i'm going to poop myself. (probably will anyway)

One of the big screws on the main wire coming in is looking kinda corroded, so it probably wouldn't really be a bad idea to do it. I just don't know if i'm up for it. I'd probably end up having the power off for a week trying to figure out how to get everything back in the way it goes.

Besides, I only have 13.5" of width where the panel is installed. I was just looking at subpanels at home bleepo and can't find any that narrow at all.

My wife wants me to watch some crappy movie with her now, so i'll check in on this again tomorrow.

Thanks for the input.
