Utah Utes football notebook: NFL player Robert Johnson returns to speak with the Utes

SALT LAKE CITY ? A blast from Utah?s past spoke to the Utes after practice Tuesday. Tennessee Titans safety Robert Johnson returned to his alma mater to offer encouragement and show his support.

?The season?s a little bit rough but it?s not over,? Johnson said in his remarks to the team. ?We need them to play as good as we were playing. They have the talent. They have the players. They have the same coaching staff.?

Johnson, who concluded his Utah career in 2009, added that the Utes just need to perform and become bowl eligible over the next two weeks.

?They need to have fun,? he said. ?The best way to have fun is going bowling. That?s the best way.?

Senior wide receiver Reggie Dunn noted that Johnson told them to play with swagger and confidence.

?It was really inspiring to hear from a former player that?s in the NFL,? Dunn said. ?For him to be able to come back and talk to us was great.?

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham also appreciated Johnson?s return to Utah during his NFL bye week.

?It was great. It?s always good to have the former players come around, and we?ve had a lot of them this year,? Whittingham said. ?I think that speaks well of the program. We enjoy having him around, the players enjoy having him around. So it?s a positive thing for that.?

DEVONTE ON DEFENSE: Senior wide receiver DeVonte Christopher, who has seen limited action in recent weeks, was taking reps at safety in practice as the Utes prepare to face Arizona.

?He?s got a lot of athletic ability and we?re a little thin in the back end. We have been all year and maybe we should have taken a look at that sooner,? Whittingham said. ?But for a game like this one, where it's all spread and four wides, you?re going to need a lot of secondary guys, and we?ll see if he can help us back there.?

Christopher, meanwhile, is also making strides to get back in the receiving rotation. Whittingham said the team?s top receiver the past two seasons has done a nice job in practice Monday and Tuesday.

Whittingham, however, wouldn?t say if Christopher could see playing time on both sides of the ball against the Wildcats.

?We?ll see,? he said. ?It?s too early in the week to make that determination.?

EXTRA POINTS: The Utes practiced at Rice-Eccles Stadium instead of the indoor facility. ? John White has moved into a tie with Del ?Popcorn? Rodgers and Eddie Johnson for the most 100-yard rushing games in Utah history with 12. ? Utah is the national co-leader in fumbles returned for touchdowns (3) and second in total forced fumbles (18).

Oil down after payment delayed to Greece

BANGKOK (AP) ? Oil prices fell Tuesday, after European finance ministers put off the release of the next installment of debt-mired Greece's urgently needed bailout loan.

Benchmark oil for December delivery fell 56 cents at midday Bangkok time to $85.01 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 50 cents to finish at $85.57 per barrel on the Nymex on Monday.

Crude oil prices have been caught among data showing improving export growth for China, an economic contraction in Japan for the latest quarter and "continued uncertainty about the latest Greece deal," Michael Hewson, senior market analyst at CMC Markets, said in an email commentary.

Greece's international creditors failed to agree Monday on how to get the country's bailout program back on track. The release of the next batch of loans that Athens is using to pay its day-to-day bills was put off until Nov. 20.

The European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the European Commission have twice agreed to bail out Greece, pledging a total of ?240 billion in rescue loans. The country has received about ?150 billion of those loans so far.

Meanwhile, the U.S. still appears headed for the so-called fiscal cliff ? a combination of tax hikes and government spending cuts that will take effect Jan. 1 unless President Barack Obama and Congress can reach a compromise to avert it. Economists believe that would hurt growth in the world's largest economy and possibly risk a recession.

Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, dropped 61 cents to $108.46 per barrel in London.

Among other energy futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

? Heating oil fell 1.1 cents to $2.9883 per gallon.

? Gasoline futures dropped 1.6 cents to $2.6226 per gallon.

? Natural gas rose 2.2 cents to $3.592 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Playroom ? if you have young children, having a dedicated play area is a wonderful way of clearing some of the clutter and toys out of the main living areas of the house.
Make sure you choose durable, easy to clean and maintain finishes and that the room is properly childproofed.

Teenagers? basement ? if your kids are getting to an age where they (and you) are craving more independence, you may want to dedicate large parts of the basement for their use. Perhaps you?ll want to build them a basement bedroom or you might want to keep all of the sleeping quarters upstairs and build a teen-friendly hangout in the basement. Depending on their interests, this might include a band practice area, a media room or a study space.

Craft/hobby room ? our main living areas often have to play double duty when it comes to crafts and hobbies. Why not dedicate an entire area to your personal interests? This might be as simple as a quiet den, reading room or meditation room or it might be more involved, housing a home gym, home theater, art studio or workshop.

Bathroom ? however you end up finishing your basement, it is a great idea to include a spare bathroom so you don?t constantly have to run upstairs while you?re downstairs enjoying your swanky new quarters.

King Coal hasn't abdicated throne in Kentucky

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) ? Kentucky's beleaguered coal industry, suffering under economic conditions that have cost the jobs of some 2,000 miners over the past year, isn't so feeble after all.

Just ask U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler, the Democrat from Versailles who was pummeled in last week's general election by coal-backed Republican Andy Barr in the 6th District.

Barr featured coal miners in his TV ads, talked incessantly about the Obama administration's "war on coal," and raked in campaign cash from wealthy coal executives angry about federal environmental regulations that have made it more expensive to unearth coal.

By the time the race was over, President Barack Obama had been vilified as an enemy of the mining industry, and Chandler had been portrayed as his surrogate in Kentucky. That turned out to be Chandler's undoing. Obama lost Kentucky overwhelmingly, and took Chandler down with him.

"I'm afraid President Obama was a little too heavy for us in some of the rural counties," Chandler told supporters in his concession speech Tuesday night.

Kentucky Coal Association President Bill Bissett said voters wanted to send a message to Obama.

"A lot of his disfavor here is connected directly to his anti-coal policies," Bissett said. "It is our hope that this message was heard by the president and that perhaps he changes his position."

King Coal, as the industry has been dubbed, still packs a powerful political punch. Industry executives have been flexing their muscles in a fight against increasing government restrictions on emissions from power plants and against regulatory constraints on aggressive mining methods like mountaintop removal.

Barr, a Lexington attorney, focused intently on the coalfield job losses that he blamed on the Obama administration's environmental policies, and he charged that Chandler supported those policies.

To some, it seemed odd that Barr made coal the major issue, because most of the state's mines are miles away in the more mountainous Appalachian region. But Lexington, the largest city in the district, is headquarters for several coal companies and has a large population of former miners who left the coalfields in search of work.

"There wasn't ever a time when we didn't feel like this was an important issue to focus upon," said Barr spokesman David Host. "The Obama administration's war on coal was a very salient issue throughout the 6th District."

Host said internal polling bore that out, especially after the campaign started running a TV spot featuring coal executive Heath Lovell in mining garb lamenting the decline of the coal industry. When Democrats responded by attacking Lovell, the polling showed Barr pulling ahead.

Financial reports filed with the Federal Election Commission showed coal executives gave at least $85,000 directly to Barr's campaign. They also helped finance independent groups that ran TV ads bashing Chandler and promoting Barr.

Chandler, a former attorney general who has served in Congress since 2004, insists that he's no enemy of coal. He called earlier this year for the EPA to ease up on regulations that have made it difficult to open or expand coal mines in Kentucky.

And the United Mine Workers of America endorsed Chandler for re-election. Steve Earle, a regional vice president for the UMWA, said Chandler's loss shows that King Coal remains a force to be reckoned with in Kentucky.

"They're a formidable adversary," Earle said. "I think they probably have more influence now than they ever did. Their money buys them a lot of influence."

LONDON -- Ashim Ahluwalia's debut Miss Lovely, selected for both the Festival de Cannes and Toronto Film Festival, will unspool during the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) as part of the event's AsiaAfrica program.

Ahluwalia's film, which follows two brothers working in the grubby, low-rent, semi-criminal fringes of the Bombay film business, will be among the titles competing for the event's Muhr AsiaAfrica Awards.

Also selected for this year's Toronto Film Festival, Ship Of Theseus from filmmaker, playwright and artist Anand Gandhi will be in the mix.

LONDON (AP) ? Few seem to be enjoying the management meltdown at the venerable BBC more than Rupert Murdoch, the News Corp. chief whose rival British newspapers have been caught up in their own lengthy, embarrassing and expensive phone-hacking scandal.

But the troubles for both media organizations highlight that the news industry in Britain is at rock-bottom in public esteem, and could face increased restrictions from the government of Prime Minister David Cameron, which appears convinced it has been unable to police itself.

The British Broadcasting Corp. has moved into full-bore damage control since it retracted mistaken allegations by its marquee news program that a politician sexually abused children. That serious mistake followed the BBC's earlier failure to report on widespread child sex abuse allegations against one of its biggest stars, the late Jimmy Savile.

"BBC mess gives Cameron golden opportunity (to) properly reorganize great public broadcaster," Murdoch tweeted gleefully Sunday.

The scandal follows several years of turmoil over the phone-hacking scandal, which exploded with the discovery that employees of Murdoch's News of the World tabloid hacked into a kidnapped girl's mobile phone. The scandal widened when scores of celebrities, sports stars and politicians said they, too, had been hacked. The tabloid folded, Murdoch's media paid out millions in compensation and still faces scores of lawsuits. Several news executives have been arrested.

A report due this month from Lord Justice Brian Leveson, based on months of jarring testimony about wrongdoing by Murdoch's reporters and others, may prompt the government to impose statutory regulation on the British print press, which is overseen by an industry watchdog.

Many say the reputation of the British media is at an all-time low.

"The issues the BBC is dealing with at the moment ... are very different from the phone hacking and illegal intercept of communications which led to the Leveson inquiry," said Bob Calver, a journalism professor at Birmingham City University. "(But) clearly in the public mind there won't be that distinction, the public will see it as poor standards across the board."

Murdoch's grudge against the BBC was vented in detail in a 2009 speech by his son James, a TV executive who railed against the BBC's funding, which comes from a television license fee paid by every TV household in Britain.

Because of its funding, "the BBC feels empowered" and "the scope of its activities and ambitions is chilling," said James Murdoch.

Phil Harding, the BBC's former controller of editorial policy, warned U.K. media to resist the temptation to criticize too much.

"If you really tear into another journalistic organization, what you are going to do is ... undermine public confidence in journalism," he said Monday at a Society of Editors conference in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

BBC chief George Entwistle resigned this weekend, and on Monday the head of news, Helen Boaden, and deputy Stephen Mitchell were temporarily removed from their positions, though the broadcaster said neither were implicated in the errors involving its child sex abuse reports.

The broadcaster also came under fire Monday for the terms of Entwistle's removal after only 54 days on the job. He is drawing a full year's salary of 450,000 pounds ($715,000).

"Clearly, it is hard to justify a sizeable payoff of that sort," Cameron's spokesman Steve Field told reporters.?

Iain Overton, who was involved in preparing the "Newsnight" story about the politician, resigned Monday as editor of the Bureau of Investigative Journalism. The organization, a nonprofit muckraking group based at City University in London that works with several news organizations, said the BBC story had been "strictly contrary to the fundamental principles and standards of the bureau."

Further resignations or suspensions at the BBC are likely as the investigation develops.

"Consideration is now being given to the extent to which individuals should be asked to account further for their actions and if appropriate, disciplinary action will be taken," the BBC said.

In New York, Mark Thompson, Entwistle's predecessor who was in charge when a BBC investigation into Savile's alleged abuse was sidelined, said Monday he is "very saddened" by the scandal at the broadcaster. Arriving on the first day of his new job as chief executive of The New York Times, he told reporters he has "no doubt it (the BBC) will get back on its feet."
