SpaceX capsule lands after historic mission to Space Station

NASA's first commercial cargo flight ended with a splash on Sunday, when the SpaceX Dragon capsule landed after a landmark mission to the International Space Station.

The unmanned Dragon space capsule, built by the U.S. company Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), splashed down into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Southern California at 3:22 p.m. EDT (1922 GMT), ending a three-week visit to the orbiting laboratory.

Dragon began its descent with a de-orbit burn at 2:28 p.m. EDT (1828 GMT), after departing the station at 9:29 a.m. EDT (1329 GMT) as both spacecraft sailed 255 miles (410 kilometers) above Burma. The station's crew used the outpost's robotic arm to release the spacecraft.

"It was nice while she was on board. We tamed her [and] took her home," space station commander Sunita Williams of NASA radioed Mission Control in Houston as the Dragon capsule departed. "Literally and figuratively, there are pieces of us on that spacecraft going home to Earth."

The Dragon capsule is returning hundreds of astronaut blood and urine samples from the space station amid the 1,673 pounds (758 kilograms) of experiments and gear loaded on board. Some of those samples have been waiting for more than a year. NASA's final space shuttle mission landed in July 2011, leaving the agency without a way to return big cargo deliveries to Earth until Dragon's flight.

The spacecraft is expected to be retrieved by a SpaceX recovery crew so the cargo can be delivered to NASA. The mission is the first of 12 commercial resupply flights by SpaceX under a $1.6 billion deal with NASA.

The Hawthorne, Calif.-based SpaceX (short for Space Exploration Technologies) launched the Dragon capsule toward the space station on Oct. 7 using one of the company's own Falcon 9 rockets and a pad at Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The capsule was packed with 882 pounds (400 kg) of supplies to for the station, including 260 pounds (117 kg) of crew gear, 390 pounds (176 kg) of scientific equipment, 225 pounds (102 kg) of hardware and several pounds of other cargo, NASA officials said.

The cargo returning home on Dragon are 163 pounds (74 kg) of crew supplies, 866 pounds (392 kg) of scientific research and 518 pounds (235 kg) of other hardware, they added. ?

SpaceX is the first robotic spacecraft ever to be capable of returning cargo to Earth.

"It has been an historic mission," NASA spokesman Josh Byerly said during undocking commentary. ?

The unmanned cargo ships built by Russia, Japan and Europe are all designed for one-way trips and are intentionally destroyed during re-entry at the end of their missions. The Russian Soyuz capsules that ferry crews to and from the space station have limited cargo return capabilities, NASA scientists have said.

SpaceX was founded by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk in 2002 as a private spaceflight company. In May, the company launched its first Dragon capsule test flight to the space station to set the stage for this month's first cargo delivery flight. The next Dragon cargo mission is slated to launch in mid-January.

SpaceX is one of two companies with deals to launch cargo delivery flights on unmanned spacecraft for NASA. The other company, Virginia's Orbital Sciences Corp., has a $1.9 billion contract with the agency for at least eight missions to the station using the new Antares rocket and Cygnus spacecraft. The first Antares test flight is set for later this year.

With its space shuttle fleet retired, NASA is relying on the Dragon and Cygnus spacecraft to ferry U.S. supplies to and from the International Space Station. The space agency is also supporting the development of new commercial U.S. spacecraft to launch American astronauts on space station trips.

SpaceX is one of four companies currently developing manned private space taxis with NASA funding support. The company is upgrading its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsules to eventually launch crews of seven astronauts into orbit.

US sues Bank of America for 'brazen' fraud at Countrywide

US seeks more than $1 billion from Bank of America, which acquired Countrywide in 2008. Bank of America had no immediate comment on federal charges of reckless lending practices.?

The latest federal lawsuit over alleged mortgage fraud paints an unflattering picture of a doomed lender: Executives at Countrywide Financial urged workers to churn out loans, accepted fudged applications and tried to hide ballooning defaults.

The suit, filed Wednesday by the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, also underscored how?Bank?of America's?purchase of Countrywide in July 2008, just before the financial crisis, backfired severely.

The prosecutor, Preet Bharara, said he was seeking more than $1 billion, but the suit could ultimately recover much more in damages.

"This lawsuit should send another clear message that reckless lending practices will not be tolerated," Bharara said in a statement. He described Countrywide's practices as "spectacularly brazen in scope."

Bank?of?America?had no immediate comment.

Countrywide was a giant in mortgage lending, but was also known for approving exotic, even risky, loans. By 2007, as the market for subprime mortgages collapsed, Countrywide was anxious for revenue.

The lawsuit alleged that the company loosened its standards for making loans while telling Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which were buying loans from Countrywide, that standards were getting tighter.

Fannie and Freddie, which packaged loans into securities and sold them to investors, were effectively nationalized in 2008 when they nearly collapsed under the weight of their mortgage losses.

To churn out more mortgage loans, Bharara said, Countrywide introduced a program called the "Hustle," shorthand for "High-Speed Swim Lane." It operated under the motto, "Loans Move Forward, Never Backward."

The program eliminated checks meant to ensure that mortgages were being made to borrowers who could afford them, according to the lawsuit.

For example, loan processors no longer had to complete worksheets that helped them assess whether income levels that borrowers entered on their loan applications were reasonable.

If processors entered a borrower's information into a computerized underwriting program and the program raised flags, employees were encouraged to change the numbers, the suit said.

It also said that bonuses were awarded based solely on the number of loans that an employee could generate, not on their quality.

The process led to "widespread falsification" of mortgage data, Bharara charged. And when Countrywide executives became aware of the dangerously high number of borrowers defaulting, it hid the problem, according to the lawsuit.

In early 2008, for example, Countrywide offered bonuses for employees who could "rebut" the high rate of defaults. The standards were low, according to the lawsuit: If a review found that the income a borrower listed on his application seemed unreasonable, an employee could rebut the finding "simply by arguing that the stated income was reasonable."

The lawsuit gives seven examples of mortgages made for homes in California, Alabama, Florida and Georgia in which the borrowers' income and other qualifications were falsified.

For example, one loan application, for a home in Miami, said that the borrower was an airline sales representative earning $15,500 per month, when the borrower worked for a temp agency and earned $2,666 per month. The borrower defaulted within seven months, the suit said.

A loan application for a home in Birmingham, Ala., failed to disclose $81,000 in debt that the borrower was carrying. That borrower defaulted within a year, the suit said.

The lawsuit accused Countrywide, and later?Bank?of?America, of selling thousands of Hustle loans to Fannie and Freddie. The lawsuit says that that the Hustle program continued through 2009.

According to the lawsuit, Fannie and Freddie don't review loans before they purchased them. Instead, they relied on?banks' statements that the loans met certain qualifications.

Bharara said the lawsuit was the first civil fraud suit brought by the Justice Department concerning loans later sold to Fannie and Freddie. When Fannie and Freddie collapsed, investors were wiped out.

Taxpayers have spent $170 billion to keep Fannie and Freddie afloat, and it could cost $260 billion more to support the companies through 2014 after subtracting dividend payments to taxpayers, according to the government.

The lawsuit says that Fannie and Freddie suffered $1 billion in losses because they had to pay for Countrywide's defaulted loans. The lawsuit also complains that?Bank?of?America?is refusing to buy back mortgages "even where the loans admittedly contained material defects or even fraudulent misrepresentations."

Bank?of?America's?purchase of Countrywide originally earned it plaudits from lawmakers because?Bank?of America?was viewed as stepping in to eliminate a bad actor from the mortgage market.

But the purchase, instead of padding?Bank?of?America's?mortgage business, has drawn a drumbeat of regulatory fines, lawsuits and losses.

Bank?of?America?reported last week that while it is issuing more mortgages ? $21 billion worth last quarter, up 18 percent from a year earlier ? its mortgage unit is still losing money as the?bank?works through crisis-era problems.

In the past year and a half, Bharara's office has settled lawsuits against CitiMortgage, Flagstar?Bank?and Deutsche?Bank?over mortgages. Its lawsuits against Wells Fargo and Allied Home Mortgage are pending.

A good golf swing breaks down into certain key elements.

For this, you need to look at how your foot placement. They should be spaced at shoulders width and your right heel should be placed slightly behind you. The final placement of your feet doesn't matter beyond that, as there is no right or wrong place to perfectly place them. However, you do want to be sure you aren't hovering over the ball.

To master this simple golf swing, all you need to do is to relax your arms and allow them to hang naturally. Your elbows should then be placed slightly in front of your body as you hold onto the club. If you are placing your arms away from your body, you are going to find that you aren't able to properly hit the ball.

When you grip the club, you will need to be sure that you are holding it firmly. This is just enough to ensure that you don't lose your grip when you swing, but not hard enough that you cannot pivot the club properly.

With this grip in place, you will want to line up your ball with the center of the club. Now, you will want to determine the direction you want the ball to go to. Once you have determined the target, you will align your club, ball and then target.

Your back swing should be slow and easy. Swinging back hard will steal accuracy from the downswing and can throw your body off balance. Lean back slightly to place a bit of weight on your back foot and follow through with the down swing. Your shoulders should turn slightly on the back swing and back in the other direction as you move into the follow through.

You will discover that the best golf swing will be something that takes precision. While it might seem simple, you will need to understand it does take work. While there are websites, videos and books on this, a professional will be the best way to get these skills down properly. After all, nothing will replace hands-on training.

I remember when I had Harlan I was so caught up on what essential baby items I needed. I knew that I wouldn?t have much time to get out of the house and I wanted to have everything that would get me and my baby through those first few weeks together. Thankfully I had family nearby that threw me a wonderful baby shower giving me all of the essentials (and more) that I needed.

With Avery I was very lucky to have many of those essentials stored away and ready for her arrival. We didn?t have to buy much at all for her and she is happily wearing many of her sister?s hand me downs that are still in great shape.

Although I know how fortunate I am, I know that there are many not as fortunate and that are doing everything they can to provide the essentials for their little one.?I recently discovered ?something amazing that the government in Finland does for all new mothers in their country. When I read about the program, I was blown away at their generosity and passion for women and children.

All expectant mothers living in Finland receive a package of baby essentials from the government. The package including clothes, bedding, and other child care items. The program started back in 1937 and was originally reserved only for low-income mothers. The grant was introduced to try to combat the low birth rate and high infant mortality of the time. In 1949 the grant became accessible to all mothers in Finland. First time mothers now have the option of receiving the maternity package or a cash benefit. According the the Kela website, nearly all mothers choose the maternity package.

As I was looking through the contents of the package, they listed the box as a special gift as well. Now most of us would think of a box as just a box. But the Finnish government has really put a lot of thought into this program because the box can also double as a ?crib when you bring your baby home. Pretty incredible, right?

It?s inspiring to see what this country is doing to promote motherhood. It would be pretty incredible if more picked up on their generosity and did the same.

Military plans new hypersonic flight after failure

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The U.S. military said Wednesday it is planning another unmanned hypersonic flight in the wake of a failed attempt.

The flight, scheduled for next spring or summer, would be the fourth test of the experimental X-51A Waverider designed to reach Mach 6, or 3,600 mph, after being dropped by a B-52 bomber.

The Air Force has been studying hypersonic technologies with the hopes of deploying fast strikes around the globe.

Two months ago, a problem with a control fin during the third flight caused an X-51A to lose balance and crash off the Southern California coast.

Though the aircraft successfully detached from the B-52 and ignited its rocket booster to fly to Mach 4.8, it became unstable and did not activate its exotic scramjet engine ? considered the key feature of the test.

An investigation ruled out software or power failures. Signs point to a "random vibration issue," though more work is needed to pinpoint the exact cause, said program manager Charlie Brink at the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

None of flights so far has reached the intended goal of six times the speed of sound. During the first flight in 2010, an X-51A flew near Mach 5 for three minutes. A test flight last year ended prematurely with an X-51A unsuccessfully trying to restart its engine.

Brink said he expected the military to continue hypersonic flight research after next year's final flight but did not get into specifics.

Makoto Taki appointed Japan's new justice minister: Nikkei

(Reuters) - Japan Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has decided to appoint lower house lawmaker Makoto Taki as justice minister following the resignation of Keishu Tanaka on Tuesday, the Nikkei reported.

Taki served as justice minister until the cabinet reshuffle of October 1, the paper said.

Tanaka resigned within a few weeks of taking office because of ill health, after calls for his resignation over past ties to an organized crime syndicate.

Noda brought back Taki to minimize the impact of the second resignation by a minister since he took office in September 2011, the business daily said.

Questions.

I would like to suggest a power of Enhanced(Eidetic) Memory coupled with Adoptive Muscle Memory. Adoptive Muscle Memory is simply stated as you see it done, you can copy it. There are other names, but look it up. I imagine my character being quite lazy just watching movies all day. At least that would be until people found out he had been watching martial arts demostrations, and basketball games. Eidetic Memory could be a side effect. It is basically having a perfect memory(able to recall anything you have experienced perfectly) I could basically flip through books and recall everything my eyes had seen even though I didn't actually read it.

I want the character to be more of support for others because the power is quite versatile. What do you think? Is it awesome enough?

Will Hospital Lockdown Stop Cancer Patient's Visit With Bieber ...

(CNN) ? It?s hard to find a bigger Justin Bieber fan than Hailey Roser.

The 4-year-old Wisconsin girl has two life-size cardboard cutouts of the Biebs in her hospital room, where she fights a daily battle against an aggressive form of brain cancer.

She has endured two brain surgeries ? but doctors can?t remove all of her brain tumor. Facing months of radiation and chemotherapy, Hailey wanted nothing more than a visit from the pop superstar.

After a social media blitz, including the viral Twitter hashtag #justinvisithailey, a radio station helped score meet-and-greet tickets to Bieber?s concert Sunday in Milwaukee.

But then a mass shooting at a suburban salon Sunday forced the hospital to go on lockdown ? meaning no one could enter or leave.

This is the story of a long cherished visit that almost didn?t happen.

A simple message

The quest began in late September when a timid-sounding Hailey, with a lisp typical of many 4-year-olds, made a personal plea to Bieber in a YouTube video: ?Justin Bieber, I would really like you to come and see me. I love you.?

As the date of the show neared, her father, Eric, followed up with a plea of his own.

?If there?s any possible way that you could meet her ? see her, come to the hospital, say hi, anything ? just for 10 minutes, it would absolutely ? I just know it would put the biggest smile on her face in a time where our family doesn?t have a lot to smile about,? he said.

The family?s plea soon spread through the community and across social media, with tweets and retweets from well-wishers who wanted nothing more than for her wish to come true.

?EVERYBODY WHO SUPPORTS HAILEY RETWEET THIS! @justinbieber NEEDS TO SEE THIS!? tweeted Lexi Carl as she linked to a story about the girl that appeared in a local newspaper.

The sea of supporters posted videos of their own. Students and staff at Holmen High School set theirs to Bieber?s song ?Never Say Never.? Hailey?s family later credited that video for playing a huge role in getting media attention.

After a blitz of local media coverage, Hailey got the surprise of her life ? meet-and-greet tickets to Bieber?s concert Sunday at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee.

?Can?t believe it guys! @justinbieber is gonna do it! Without you guys this wouldn?t have happend, thank you,? tweeted a supporter, Ally Kraczek.

A roadblock

But then the unexpected occurred.

A man walked into a suburban Milwaukee salon and opened fire, striking seven people. Three of them died. The shooter then killed himself.

But in the chaos of the situation, the Children?s Hospital of Wisconsin went into lockdown.

?This means nobody is allowed to come or go. What are the chances????!!? the Facebook account Healing Hailey posted.

The Internet gasped a collective ?Oh no!?

But all was not lost. The hospital allowed Hailey to board an ambulance that took her to the show. And Bieber met with Hailey and posed with her before he went on stage.

?They let us come in backstage and meet her with just the two of them before the meet and greet..let us take pictures, and gave her some gifts. truly amazing,? Hailey?s mother wrote on Facebook.

Before he left for his next show, Bieber himself offered his thanks.

?Stay strong,? he tweeted.

Hailey said she didn?t want the day to end.

?Best day I?ve had in a long time,? she wrote.

DETROIT (AP) - When comedian George Lopez showed up at a Detroit Tigers workout Friday, Miguel Cabrera was one of the most excited players on the team.

No surprise there. Baseball's first Triple Crown winner in 45 years seems to enjoy hitting and laughing in equal proportion.

Fans are plenty familiar with Cabrera's talent - his consistently high batting average and awe-inspiring power. But his Detroit teammates appreciate him for more than that. Cabrera may be a bit shy in front of a camera or microphone, but there's a goofy side to the third baseman that helps keep his team loose.

Now in the prime of his career, Cabrera's approach remains meticulous, but he's careful not to take himself or his job too seriously.

I Need More Gay Friends | Thought Catalog

A year and a half ago I wrote a post for Thought Catalog called ?The Importance Of Having A Queer Family? in which I praised the bonds between gay men. I talked about how overjoyed I was to have found such a close-knit group of gay friends after I had moved to New York and why these relationships had been so crucial to sustaining my happiness.

Unfortunately, sometime between then and now, I?ve found myself orphaned and in dire need of a new gay family. Don?t get it twisted, nothing terrible happened. A lot of my gay friends and I just grew apart and became casualties of demanding careers, lifestyle changes, and new relationships. A part of me feels like I may have romanticized these friendships and put them on a pedestal, leading me to wonder, ?Did I ever really have a close group of gay friends or was I just embellishing??

Whatever the case may be, the reality is still the same: my number of gay friends has shrunk considerably and now I am aching for some gay-on-gay platonic friendship. Whenever I see gay men hanging out in packs, I immediately feel jealous and insecure. How did these guys all meet each other? Was there a secret meet and greet in the beginning of the year that I didn?t know about? I feel so inadequate next to them and then I start to think, ?What is it about me that has resulted in my failure of obtaining a decent amount of gay friends? Am I not leading a ?gay enough? life?? The question may seem ridiculous but it does cross my mind. I don?t do a lot of ?gay things? so, of course, my exposure to the scene is limited. But in a way it feels like a catch-22. I don?t feel like I relate and connect to a lot of gay men but, then again, maybe that?s because I don?t spend a lot of time with them. Which came first: the chicken or the gay friend? (Ew, sorry, that sounded like a bad Sex and the City joke.)

I want to feel like I?m a part of the gay community. Even though I love my friendships with heterosexuals, there?s something so important about being able to call a couple of your gay friends up and be like, ?Yo, you wanna go and be gay tonight?? In the past, I?ve had some of my best nights out when I?ve exclusively been with gay guys. We go out to the bars and be gay together and it feels amazing. I realize that I?m being sort of glib and simplistic when I talk about what it feels like to hang out with only gay guys (what does ?going out and being gay together? even mean?) but I don?t really have another way to describe it. It just feels good to be surrounded by other like-minded dudes who are into dudes. It?s like, ?Wow, we get along as people and you also like to suck dick? Score!?

Quite frankly, it?s just hard for me to get along with most gay dudes. Some of them piss me off with their basic bitch mentality or make me feel weird for not hooking up a lot. I often leave the experience feeling very much like ?the other? instead of connected. Granted, this is probably due in large part to my own issues with being gay. I?ve never felt completely accepted by the gay community because I?m not cute enough, and don?t listen to Lady Gaga or go to the gym,?so I stay away from it, out of some misguided defense mechanism. I shut them down before they have a chance to shut me down. You can?t just write people off though. That?s not how you make friends with anyone.

At the end of the day, if I?m really serious about finding more gay friends, I have to stop being such a judgmental diva and put myself out there. Although the thought terrifies me, the prospect of going through my twenties without a giant gay support network scares me more.? TC Mark

6 Afghan police killed in insider attack

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) ? An Afghan police officer and cook poisoned their colleagues at a checkpoint in an assault coordinated with insurgent fighters that left six dead in the country's south, officials said Saturday.

It was the latest in a string of attacks from inside the Afghan army and police that are threatening to undermine both the partnership with international troops ? which have been the target of many attacks ? and the morale of Afghan forces, who have suffered equally heavy casualties from such strikes.

The police officer and the cook worked with outside insurgents in the assault, which hit police manning a checkpoint in the Gereshk district of Helmand province, the governor's office said in a statement.

They poisoned two of the officers and then the militants attacked from outside, killing the remaining four officers, provincial spokesman Ahmad Zirak said. He did not say how the officers were poisoned. The police officer was captured as he fled, but the cook escaped and remains at large, Zirak added.

The gunmen escaped by motorcycle with weapons and ammunition, the governor's statement said.

A recent upsurge in the number of insider attacks on coalition troops by Afghan soldiers or police ? or insurgents disguised in their uniforms ? has further undermined public support for the war in the West. So far this year, at least 52 foreign troops ? about half of them Americans ? have been killed in insider attacks.

The Afghan government has not provided statistics on the number of its forces killed in insider attacks. However, U.S. military statistics obtained by The Associated Press show at least 53 members of the Afghan security forces had been killed in such strikes by the end of August.

Meanwhile, a Taliban attack elsewhere in Helmand killed two district community council members, while Taliban-fired rocket-propelled grenades destroyed a warehouse full of food destined for the main U.S. base in Afghanistan.

Insurgents ambushed the council members while they were driving to a tribal meeting in the volatile Sangin district, the governor's office said in its statement.

The attack against the council members is a reminder of the other worrying trend in insurgent tactics this year ? a shift toward more targeted killings of those affiliated with the government. The United Nations has recorded a sharp increase in such killings in the first six months of 2012 as compared with the same period of 2011.

The jump in insider attacks and assassinations are throwing doubt on the capability of the Afghan government and security forces to take over as international troops reduce their presence. The U.S. has pulled back the "surge" troops President Barack Obama sent soon after he took office, and other members of the international coalition have already started drawing down their forces ahead of a planned handover to the Afghans in 2014.

But Kabul's Western allies also are trying to assure the Afghans that they are not deserting them, and several countries have reached agreements with Afghanistan pledging at least financial assistance past 2014.

France, for one, recently signed a treaty with Afghanistan pledging such help, a deal that French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told reporters in Kabul on Saturday "symbolizes our friendship, our cooperation."

He noted that France is committing funds at a time when its budget is strained and said that while the remaining forces will not be fighting, they will be an essential part of a smooth transition to Afghan control.

About 2,000 French troops are departing by the end of this year, which will leave about 1,400 to help with training Afghan security forces and logistics.

In Saturday's warehouse attack, insurgents fired rocket-propelled grenades at a compound used by military contractor Supreme Group to store food and other supplies destined for Bagram Air Field, the main U.S. base in the country. A warehouse inside the compound caught fire in the assault and burned through the night.

"The local fire brigade attended the scene and brought the fire under control, but the warehouse itself and all contents were destroyed," Victoria Frost, a spokeswoman for Supreme Group in Dubai, wrote in an email. She said no one was injured and staff at the site did not have to evacuate.

The fire could still be seen burning Saturday morning, said Mohammad Asif, the deputy administrator for Bagram district, where the compound is located. He said the Supreme compound encompasses about five hectares (12 acres).

Frost said the fire was contained much earlier.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in an email that the fire at the Supreme Group compound destroyed a "large stock of food meant for U.S. troops."

Frost did not say how much material was destroyed though she did say it was "primarily food supplies," adding that the company was working to make up the loss with inventory from other warehouses.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? In this tech-savvy city teeming with commuters and tourists, the cell phone has become a top target of robbers who use stealth, force and sometimes?guns.

Nearly half of all robberies in San Francisco this year are cell phone-related, police say, and most occur on bustling transit?lines.

One thief recently snatched a smartphone while sitting right behind his unsuspecting victim and darted out the rear of a bus in mere?seconds.

Another robber grabbed an iPhone from an oblivious bus rider ? while she was still?talking.

And, in nearby Oakland, City Council candidate Dan Kalb was robbed at gunpoint of his iPhone Wednesday after he attended a neighborhood anti-crime?meeting.

?I thought he was going to shoot me,? recalled Kalb, who had dropped his phone during the stickup. ?He kept saying, ?Find the phone! Find the?phone!??

These brazen incidents are part of a ubiquitous crime wave striking coast to coast. New York City Police report that more than 40 percent of all robberies now involve cell phones. And cell phone thefts in Los Angeles, which account for more than a quarter of all the city?s robberies, are up 27 percent from this time a year ago, police?said.

?This is your modern-day purse snatching,? said longtime San Francisco Police Capt. Joe Garrity, who began noticing the trend here about two years ago. ?A lot of younger folks seem to put their entire lives on these things that don?t come?cheap.?

Thefts of cell phones? particularly the expensive do-it-all smartphones containing everything from photos and music to private e-mails and bank account statements? are costing consumers millions of dollars and sending law enforcement agencies and wireless carriers nationwide scrambling for?solutions.

In San Francisco, police have gone undercover and launched a transit ad campaign, warning folks to ?be smart with your smartphone.? Similar warnings went out in Oakland, where there have been nearly 1,300 cell phone robberies this?year.

When Apple?s ballyhooed iPhone 5 went on sale last month, New York City police encouraged buyers to register their phone?s serial numbers with the department. That came just months after a 26-year-old chef at the Museum of Modern Art was killed for his iPhone while heading home to the?Bronx.

In St. Louis, city leaders proposed an ambitious ordinance requiring anyone who resells cell phones to obtain a secondhand dealers license. Resellers also would need to record the phone?s identity number and collect detailed information including the seller?s names, addresses, a copy of their driver?s licenses ? even their?thumbprints.

?It will take a national solution to make this problem go away,? St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay said of the phone?thefts.

Though some experts put annual cell phone losses in the billions of dollars, there is no precise figure on how many devices are stolen each?year.

However, the problem has become so visible that it has caught the attention of lawmakers and regulators seeking to take the profit out of cell phone?theft.

In April, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, and New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly announced that the major U.S. cell phone carriers and the Federal Communications Commission have agreed to set up a national database to track reported stolen phones. It is scheduled to launch in late?2013.

Schumer also introduced a bill called the Mobile Device Theft Deterrence Act, which proposes a five-year prison sentence for tampering with the ID numbers of a stolen cell phone. The bill is supported by the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA), a Washington, D.C. advocacy?group.

In addition, CTIA officials said carriers are expected to launch individual databases later this month to permanently disable a cell phone reported stolen. The initiative is similar to a successful decade-old strategy in?Australia.

Previously, U.S. carriers have only been able to disable so-called SIM cards, which can be swapped in and out of phones. That?s led to a profitable black market for stolen?phones.

Chris Guttman-McCabe, CTIA?s vice president of regulatory affairs, said the goal of creating theft databases is to render stolen cell phones?worthless.

?We want to dry up the aftermarket,? Guttman-McCabe said. ?Hopefully, there will be no sense in stealing a phone and a once valuable piece of hardware will essentially turn into useless?metal.?

Right now, the incentive is to steal and that?s creating huge losses, said Kevin Mahaffey, a co-founder of Lookout, a San Francisco-based mobile security firm which has advised carriers about the national?database.

?Thieves know that carrying a smartphone is like carrying $500 in your hands,? said Mahaffey. His company estimates that stolen and lost cell phones could cost American consumers more than $30 billion this?year.

Many cities with highest rates of stolen and lost phones also rank among the FBI?s listing of U.S. cities with the highest crime rates, including Cleveland, Detroit, Oakland and Newark, N.J., Mahaffey?said.

Meanwhile, cell phone thefts and police response continue at a frenzied?pace.

In Chicago, two men were each charged with armed robbery last week after stealing an iPhone from a?teen.

In Oakland, nearly three dozen people were recently arrested during a sweep for allegedly stealing smartphones. On Tuesday, police arrested 15-year-old boy who allegedly swiped a woman?s iPhone near Oakland?s City Hall and sold it in downtown San Francisco for $200 to buy?marijuana.

?It?s a quick crime of opportunity, a snatch and grab, either by foot or on bike,? Officer Johnna Watson, an Oakland police spokeswoman, said. ?The thieves are gone in an?instant.?

The Family Circus Movie Gets a Screenwriter

I don?t know who reads The Family Circus, although I?m sure they?re perfectly nice people.? For those who haven?t read Bil Keane?s 42-year-old daily comic (now drawn by his son Jeff Keane), it?s basically ?Kids Say the Darndest Things?.? Fox and Walden Media have been trying to turn the strip into a live-action franchise since 2010, and now they?ve hired writers Nichole Millard and Kathryn Price (The Game Plan) to pen the script.

Perhaps The Family Circus is far more popular than I think.? According to Variety, ?The Family Circus books have sold over 13 million copies, and more than 60 collections of the cartoons have been published.?? Of course, I?m sure there was data saying that Marmaduke would be a big hit.? If studios are bent on opening the Sunday funnies as they?re source of inspiration, perhaps they can pick up Li?, which is actually clever, and would be a challenging adaptation since the character never speaks.

Shortlist of winners announced for the South East Asia Property ...

With entries in all categories now assessed and site visits completed across the region, the judging panels have announced the shortlist of winners for the 32 awards categories of the 2012 South East Asia Property Awards.

?The quality of entries this year was outstanding, which certainly made the judges? job a tough one,? says Terry Blackburn, CEO of Ensign Media, the organisers of the event. ?The fact that the the highest quality projects are going up in almost every corner of South East Asia really shows that the region?s time to shine on the world stage is now. There are some truly exceptional properties on the shortlist and we?re confident that the South East Asia Property Awards will become the benchmark by which to recognise them.?

Intense discussions took place among the judging panel and final decisions were agreed based on the entry criteria and inspections by specialist teams in each of the locations covered by the awards, including Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

For the non-development awards, which include Best Developer and Best Property Consultancy, the panel of expert judges reviewed entries and submitted their scores according to the published criteria to BDO Advisory. The panel then met to discuss and select a final short-list in the presence of a representative from BDO.

For the development awards, a 3-5 person local team visited each of the short-listed developments and conducted a face-to-face meeting with project senior executives as well as a site inspection, after which the local judges met privately to discuss the merits of each development, with a representative of BDO present. After all short-listed entrants were visited, the local judges convened to decide upon the shortlist and submit their decisions to a representative of BDO.

The editors at South East Asia Property Report Magazine also selected Mr. Jose E. B. Antonio, CEO of Century Properties Group Inc. for the prestigious Property Report Real Estate Personality of the Year Award. He and his wife will attend the event to receive the award in person.
