GoT Iron Throne Reviewed by Those Who Know it Best [Design]

We were pretty excited when HBO added to its online shop a life-size replica of the iron throne from Game of Thrones. And if anyone at HBO is interested in having us review one of these $30,000 "office chairs" (ahem...), we'd certainly not turn down a review unit. More »

Franchise Business: Determine Whether Your Business Should Be ...

How do you go about determining whether your business has a future as a franchise business? This is the ultimate question that you have to consider as a potential franchisor. You may have a successful business and may see franchising as a sure route to success, but it is possible for franchising to be the wrong route for your business. Like other major business decisions, this is something that you will have to do research on and to think about long and hard.

?

?

One of the first issues you need to consider is the type of business you would like yours to grow into. If you want to expand your business by a few regional branches or offices, then franchising is not likely to be the way for you. Franchising involves so much legal red tape and expense that you do not want to venture in that direction for a relatively small expansion. If, on the other hand, your long-term plan is to expand nationwide and to do so dramatically, then you are probably right to consider turning it into a franchise business. Franchising is ideal for large-scale, accelerated growths of this kind because they are more financially manageable this way. Rather than having to shoulder all the associated financial burdens, you can rely on your franchisees to share the load. Furthermore, because they are investing their own capital into the process, your franchisees are bound to be more invested in making things work than would an employee you hired to run a branch of your business.

Something else you have to think about is whether your business will work well as a franchise business. Not every business can work under this model. Some businesses work best as mom-and-pop stores. They owe much of their success to the unique styles and personalities of their operators and to other contextual factors. If someone tries to replicate these businesses at other locations, he or she will quickly realize that they do not translate successfully in the new contexts. A business of this kind does not make a good franchise business. For businesses to be franchised successfully, the formulae on which they are based have to be replicable in other contexts with equal or greater success.

In addition to being replicable, your business should sell a distinct, innovative idea that makes it stand out in the market in order to survive post-franchising. It is not enough to simply copy another franchise business?s ideas and hope for success. You will be competing with that business, and the only way to do so effectively is to offer customers something that your competitor doesn?t.

(AP) ? Greece's election campaign turned ugly Thursday on live TV: The spokesman of the extreme-right Golden Dawn party, after trading insults of "commie" and "fascist," lunged at two female left-wing politicians on a mainstream morning talk show, throwing water at one and smacking the other three times across the face.

The violent display reminiscent of trash TV, a week and a half ahead of crucial elections, stunned Greeks as they seek to avoid a catastrophic exit from the common euro currency. Prosecutors immediately issued an arrest warrant for Ilias Kasidiaris, whose party alarmed Europe by gaining 21 of Parliament's 300 seats in Greece's inconclusive May 6 elections.

Golden Dawn, which vehemently denies the neo-Nazi label, has been accused of violent attacks against immigrants in Athens. The party denies involvement in the attacks, insisting it is a nationalist patriotic group campaigning on a platform of ridding the country of illegal immigrants and cleaning up crime-ridden neighborhoods. It has advocated planting anti-personnel mines along Greece's borders to stop migrants from sneaking across.

The attack "put on public display what was widely known," said the radical left-wing Syriza party, whose member Rena Dourou was splashed with water on the show. "The true face of this criminal organization."

Tempers frayed on the daily morning political show on the private Antenna television station during a political debate, to which representatives of all seven parties that won parliamentary seats on May 6 had been invited.

Discussion had turned to the country's natural resources. But it went off on a tangent about political history in Greece, which suffered a vicious civil war between Communists and the right-wing after World War II, and a seven-year military dictatorship that ended in 1974.

Kasidiaris, his temper wearing thin, shot an insult of "you old Commie" at prominent Communist Party member Liana Kanelli, in return for her branding him a "fascist." Kasidiaris also took offense at a reference by Dourou to a court case pending against him.

It all careened into violence after Dourou, 58, said there was a "crisis of democracy when people who will take the country back 500 years have got into the Greek parliament." The 31-year-old Kasidiaris, who has served in the Greek military's special forces, bounded out of his seat and hurled a glass of water at her, shouting an insult loosely translated as "you circus act."

Talk show host Giorgos Papadakis ? shouting "no, no, no!" ? ran over to Kasidiaris, attempting to calm him down. But a furious Kasidiaris turned on Kanelli, who had gotten out of her chair and appeared to throw a newspaper at the Golden Dawn member.

Kasidiaris hit Kanelli three times ? with right-left-right slaps to the sides of her head.

Papadakis tried and failed to restrain him.

The channel cut to a commercial break, and returned five minutes later without Kasidiaris.

The court case Dourou referred to was one in which Kasidiaris is accused of participation in a 2007 attack on a student. He faces charges of assisting in robbery and bodily harm after his car was allegedly used in the incident in which a student had his identity card stolen. Kasidiaris claims the accusation is politically motivated by Syriza members. The case was to be heard in court on Wednesday but has been postponed to June 11.

Papadakis and Kanelli later said attempts had been made to restrain Kasidiaris after the scuffle by shutting him in a room in the TV channel's building, but he broke through the door and left. Police were searching for him to serve the arrest warrant, which under Greek law must be carried out within 24 hours.

"The government condemns in the most categorical way the attack by Golden Dawn spokesman Ilias Kasidiaris against Liana Kanelli and Rena Dourou," government spokesman Dimitris Tsiodras said. "This attack is an attack against every democratic citizen."

Tsiodras called on Golden Dawn to condemn its member's actions.

For its part, Golden Dawn said it was Kanelli who first attacked Kasidiaris, "hitting him unprovoked in the face with a packet of documents."

"Golden Dawn continues its fight for a strong nationalist movement against everyone, and naturally against the orphans of Marx, who dominate on the (broadcast) channels and are playing a dirty propaganda game," the party said in a statement.

"If you want us to condemn our co-fighter for a truly unfortunate moment, you should first condemn the insults and the attack by Liana Kanelli, otherwise you are nothing but sad hypocrites following orders."

Golden Dawn won nearly 7 percent of the vote on May 6, giving it 21 seats in the 300-member Parliament. It was a radical increase from its showing in the previous elections in 2009, when the party won just 0.31 percent of the vote.

Greeks reeling from two years of austerity amid their country's vicious financial crisis punished the two main parties, the conservative New Democracy and socialist PASOK, turning instead to smaller radical parties to the right and left.

The 300 deputies took up their seats for a day last month before parliament was dissolved and new elections called as no party won enough votes to form a government on its own. Negotiations for a coalition government collapsed after 10 days.

"The people voted for them because they didn't know what Golden Dawn was. They didn't know they're a new form of neo-Nazis," said Athenian Maria Misaridaki as she walked through the capital's central Syntagma Square. "They saw the violence. It should open their eyes so as not to vote for them."

Signs of hope in a former Baghdad killing field

BAGHDAD (AP) ? For residents of Azamiyah, once one of Baghdad's most violent neighborhoods, the opening of a department store selling party dresses, imported men's suits and designer label perfumes is a sign that a better future could lie ahead.

Just five years ago, Azamiyah was a terrifying place. Bodies of Shiites and Sunnis butchered in sectarian killings turned up almost daily, dumped on sidewalks or in trash piles, earning one street the name "Street of Death." Fearful residents huddled at home. A U.S. infantry company on patrol here lost 13 men to snipers and roadside bombs during the bloodiest period of 2006 and 2007.

Now the glass-fronted five-story MaxiMall department store stays open as late as midnight, and Sunnis and Shiites shop side by side. Azamiyah is overwhelmingly Sunni, but salespeople say they get many customers from surrounding Shiite areas, drawn by colorful displays and air conditioning that offers a welcome relief from Baghdad's dusty heat.

Multilevel shopping centers are still rare in Baghdad, and the $3 million investment by the Turkish owners of MaxiMall, which opened in April, is seen as a show of confidence in Azamiyah's future.

"The terrorists have failed, and Baghdad is turning into a city of life instead of being a city of death," said Umm Zaid, 45, browsing through the store with three children in tow. "It is no longer a risk to take my kids to the streets and shops."

But many fear the calm won't last.

Sunnis, though a minority in Iraq, were the dominant group under toppled dictator Saddam Hussein, a Sunni. Now they feel vulnerable to the whims of the Shiite-dominated government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who has been accused of stoking sectarian tensions by sidelining Sunni and Kurdish coalition partners.

As a former stronghold of support for Saddam and a center of Sunni pride, Azamiyah feels particularly exposed, said Daoud Mohammed, a local member of the Sunni local council. "Azamiyah will be a target and will move backward" if sectarian violence resumes, he said. "But if the political problem is solved, Azamiyah will witness a quick development."

The heavy presence of the Iraqi army is seen as a particular provocation in Azamiyah. The neighborhood is cut off from the rest of Baghdad by a loop of the Tigris River and a 12-foot-high (4-meter) wall of cement slabs erected by U.S. troops in 2007.

Five years later, army checkpoints control movement in and out of the neighborhood, with lines of cars backing up even in off-hours. Coils of barbed wire and large cement blocs close some streets. Soldiers in Humvees monitor potential hotspots, such as the Abu Hanifa mosque, perhaps the most important Sunni shrine in Iraq and a past hub for insurgents.

During Saddam's rule, middle-class Azamiyah was famous for its barbecue restaurants that drew Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds alike for late-night feasts of skewered lamb. The Abu Hanifa mosque was a regionally renowned center of Sunni learning and holds the remains of a revered Sunni scholar. Members of the Hashemite dynasty that briefly ruled Iraq are buried in a mausoleum on the edge of Azamiyah.

On April 9, 2003, when most of Baghdad had already fallen to American troops, Saddam chose Azamiyah for his last public appearance, climbing on top of a car to exhort dozens of supporters to keep fighting the invaders before he slipped into hiding. The neighborhood fell quickly, but only after a fierce battle, and eventually turned into a base for al-Qaida-led insurgents.

During the sectarian fighting of 2005-2007, the Sunni enclave and its outskirts became one of the main battle grounds for Sunni and Shiite death squads.

Ashreen Street in Azamiyah, close to the center, soon earned the nickname "Street of Death" because of the large number of bodies found there ? most shot in the head execution-style, but others with signs of torture, such as nails driven through victims' limbs. Shops opened only for a couple of hours a day, and frightened residents sought refuge in their homes well before nightfall.

Maj. Michael Baka, who commanded Charlie Company, an infantry unit assigned to Azamiyah, said that on his very first patrol in August 2006, he found a dead man in a trash pile. On a U.S. military map that tracked where bodies were found, "my sector just blew up like a light," he said by phone from Afghanistan, his current posting. "There were dots everywhere."

Mohammed, the local council member, said about 1,000 Azamiyah residents have been killed since 2003 and that some 5,000 fled, including 2,000 Shiites and 3,000 Sunnis. About half the Shiites have since returned, while the vast majority of Sunni refugees ? generally those who were better off and settled in other countries ? remain in exile.

Ahmed Mohammed, a 39-year-old real estate agent, fled with his wife and three children to Egypt in 2006, after he was threatened by insurgents for business ties with Americans. A Sunni, he returned to Azamiyah for work in 2009 after he ran out of money, but keeps his family in Egypt.

"There is not a single reason that makes me optimistic about the future," he said. "There are no services and risks are high.

Amer Hasnawi, a Shiite, left Azamiyah in 2006, afraid to get caught by militiamen, even though he protectively carried both Shiite and Sunni IDs. "My Sunni neighbors were urging me not to leave," said the 39-year-old furniture salesman and father of two. "I told them, 'You are not going to protect me when the gunmen come to me at night or if I am arrested while walking in the street.' "

He returned in late 2007, to a warm welcome from his Sunni neighbors, and said the situation has improved dramatically. "Now there is a kind of coexistence," he said. "People discovered in the end that killings will not solve their problems."

Across Baghdad, the level of violence has dropped considerably in recent years, though insurgents from time to time still target religious sites, government officials and members of the security forces in bombings and shootings. Earlier this week, 23 people were killed in a suicide bombing outside the Shiite Endowment, the office running Iraq's Shiite religious and cultural sites.

Azamiyah residents complain that security forces conduct frequent arrest sweeps. They believe Sunni applicants are not given a fair chance in public sector hiring and that municipal services are even worse in their neighborhood than elsewhere in Baghdad.

"I want to stay in my country, but the future is uncertain because we cannot see a ray of hope," said Hamid al-Azami, 45, a doctoral student in Islamic studies who also works as a barber in a narrow stall in the open-air market outside the Abu Hanifa mosque.

Lt. Gen. Hassan Baidani, a top Baghdad security official, denied that troops are singling out Azamiyah and said about half the checkpoints would be removed later this month, after an important Shiite religious holiday. Mohammed Hashim, a city spokesman, said services are bad all over Baghdad, not just in Sunni areas. Since the U.S.-led invasion, Iraqis have endured daily power cuts.

Azamiyah residents reserve some of their greatest bitterness for the United States.

Mohammed, the local council member, said he bluntly told U.S. officials during a trip by an Azamiyah delegation to Washington in 2008 that "you have destroyed the country and people hate you."

Still, residents said American soldiers generally made an effort to spare neighborhood's civilians, could be reasoned with and contributed to the gradual security improvement since 2008. U.S. troops withdrew from Iraq in December.

Maj. Cecil Strickland, who took command of Charlie Company in March 2007, said he believes the unit, which lost 13 soldiers over 15 months, served as a catalyst for the turnaround.

"I think we did not waste our time," he said in a phone interview from Colorado Springs, Colorado. Even then, he said, Azamiyah was not without hope. "I would like to think that some of that hope has come to fruition," he said.

UN warning on 'risk of cyberwar'

The UN has urged countries to seek a "peaceful resolution" in cyberspace to avoid the threat of global cyberwar.

The comments by the head of the UN's telecommunications agency came a week after Flame, one of the most complex cyber-attacks to date, was uncovered.

Dr Hamadoun Toure told the BBC that he did not suspect the US of being behind the attack.

He added that developing countries were being helped to defend themselves more adequately against threats.

Giving his first public interview about the attack, Dr Toure said the UN's International Telecommunications Union (ITU), which co-ordinates the sharing of communication infrastructure across the world, had been following the threat since May.

He said he did not consider Flame to be an act of cyberwar.

"It hasn't reached that level yet as it has been detected in time," he added.

When asked about the attack's possible source, he said: "All indications are that Flame has been created by a nation state, that's clear.

"The ITU is not mandated to make a judgement on who is responsible. Our role is to work with partners to promote better co-operation."

However, Dr Toure said he had discussed the matter directly with some countries, but added: "I don't suspect that the US is behind it."

End Quote Dr Hamadoun Toure General Secretary, ITU

He said media reports suggesting US involvement in Stuxnet, a previous major attack, were "speculation".

'Weak link'

He told the BBC that it was important for UN member states to work closely to defend themselves against the emerging cyberthreat.

"There is a risk of cyberwar - but it's not necessary. That's what we're trying to do: prevent. We're saying the best way to win a war is to avoid it in the first place."

"As the UN, of course we are interested in making sure there is a peaceful resolution, and a peaceful approach to this.

"Our role is first to co-ordinate international efforts - not only sharing knowledge, but also training people, especially from developing countries because we want to avoid one country being a weak link in the whole process.

"Therefore, we're trying to see that there's a global effort to keep cyberspace free of politics, ideology and especially free of criminals."

He acknowledged that governments face a challenge in ensuring the safety of their citizens while preserving their freedom online - something Dr Toure said he considered a "basic right".

He added: "There is a fine line between security and freedom.

"Some people try to oppose them. We say no, we want both. You can't be free if you're not secure. You can't have privacy without security - that's why we want to have both."

Efforts to establish the source and full extent of the Flame attack are ongoing.

Kaspersky Labs, one of the companies which first revealed the malware, said this week that the attack sought mainly to steal technical documents from Iran.

Diabetes and Obesity Leads to Premature Death | Fitness ...

I am rather upset. America has had some really great changes through the years and some that are leading to health epidemics. I am a child of the 1960?s and our mother had to call us inside to eat supper every evening and then again when it got dark. We never wanted to be sitting down in front of an electronic device or television. Our lives were spent outside exploring the neighborhood. We played with our friends. Pick up games of kickball and softball were common during the warmer months of the year.

Did you know that 1 out of 5 children are obese?

Did you know that type 2 Diabetes is increasing in children at an alarming rate?

By the year 2030, 1 out of every 3 people in North America will have Diabetes.

Here is how this epidemic got started and has flourished. I am just writing what I thought about the situation from my own personal life experience.

  • In the 1960?s Fast Food Restaurants Appeared
  • Mothers Took Jobs Outside the Home
  • Families Slowly Quit Eating Home Cooked Meals at the Dinner Table
  • Color Televisions Became Affordable for Most Homes
  • Super Sized Meals and Big Gulp Sugary Soft Drinks at Fast Food Restaurants
  • Technology Devices and Game Boys Keep People Occupied on a Couch

When someone sits in front of a television for extended periods of time, their creative abilities are diminished. The viewers are bombarded by advertisements for double bacon cheeseburgers with french fries and a big gulp sugary drink. So the person loses their critical thinking ability and becomes a slave to satisfy the cravings for fat and sugar that the fast food industry has in the foods these fast food companies sell.

The end result is a person that becomes dependent on the next powerful segment of society. The fast food industry now hands the obese person that either has diabetes or is pre-diabetic over to the pharmaceutical drug industry. People die from being overweight and from having diabetes.

Now the orthodox medical community practices good medicine to try and keep the diabetic from suffering from serious issues like blindness, kidney failure, loss of limbs and other health issues. The patient now will be on medication to keep the blood sugar stable for many years. There is a better way.

Did you know that eating a diet that is plant based and getting daily exercise has been proven to reverse diabetes and heart disease? I am so thankful that I had my own epiphany back in 1998 after I had eliminated cigarette smoking from my habits. I was able to lose the 70 excess pounds I was carrying around. I have since removed all poor dietary choices and only drink pure water and eat vegan recipes. I have not struggled with weight since 1998.

I woke up in time to complete a Bachelors Degree in an excellent University. Studying in college opened my mind up. I do still enjoy a few programs that come on PBS. I limit television to whether I can learn something from the show. I would rather sit with a classic book than watch television.

  • Enjoy spending an hour a day doing some form of physical activity
  • Enjoy fixing home cooked vegan meals that taste great
  • Enjoy reading books that I learn something that I did not know before
  • Enjoy looking and feeling great as I age
  • Enjoy having a positive outlook on life
  • Enjoy not being a slave to fast food industry or pharmaceutical drug industry

7 Point Formula for Financial Freedom: Personal Finance Tips to ...

Financial Success | June 5th, 2012 | No Comments ?

financial planning-make more money-personal finance-financial freedomOne goal that we all have in common is that we all want to make more money and improve our personal finance. However, only a small percentage of us actually achieve the financial freedom we long for. We all want to have enough money so that we never have to worry about money again. The only question is, ?are you going to do it or not??

The good news is that there are more people achieving financial freedom faster today than ever before. There are currently almost four million millionaires, most of them self-made, first generation. Through proper financial planning and making it a goal to improve your personal finance, you can become one of them too.

Here is a seven point formula that you can use to?make more money, improve your personal finance, and achieve financial freedom in the years ahead. I have taught this proven formula to countless people in my seminars and I have never had anyone tell me that it didn?t work and that it did not help them make more money. All over the country, I run into people who improved their personal finance and are now earning many thousands of dollars more each year as a result of applying this formula and consistently improving their financial planning.

This formula for financial freedom is based on the fact that it is possible for you to increase your productivity, performance and output by one half of one percent per week. This one half percent improvement can be achieved by something as simple as setting better priorities each day. If you can improve your productivity, performance and output by one half of one percent per week, and you can do this for four weeks in a row, you will be two percent more productive than you were when you began. Here they are:

1. The Golden Hour

Get up every morning two hours before you have to be at work, or at your first appointment, and invest the first hour in yourself. This is called the ?Golden Hour.? And the first hour of the morning is the rudder of the day. It sets the tone for everything that happens afterward.

If you read one hour each morning, that will translate into about one book per week. This will translate into about 50 books per year, or 500 books over the next ten years. The very act of reading one hour every single day will enable you to increase your productivity, performance and output by one half percent per week consistently. It will give you your thousand percent increase over ten years.

2. Rewrite Your Major Goals for Financial Freedom

Rewrite and review your goals every day and think of how you could accomplish them. This will take you between five and ten minutes. The very act of writing and rewriting your goals, and thinking about them each morning before you start off, will increase your productivity, performance and output by half a percent per week, two percent per month, 26% per year.

3. Plan Every Day in Advance

Step number three is for you to plan every day in advance. The best time to do this is the night before. The very act of planning each day, each week, each month, in advance will make you far sharper and more precise at everything you do. You will find yourself with better focus and a greater sense of self-control and personal power when you work from a list. Your efficiency will jump 25% the first day.

4. The Principle of Concentration

Concentrate single mindedly, every hour of every day, on the most valuable use of your time. The principle of concentration is absolutely essential to achieve financial freedom. Virtually everything you do in terms of goal setting and financial planning is aimed at enabling you to determine the one or two things that you should concentrate on more than anything else.

Your ability to develop the habit of concentration will do more to assure your personal finance success than perhaps any other skill or habit you can acquire.

5. Listen to Audio Programs to Make More Money

Listen to audio programs in your car. The average person spends 500 to 1000 hours per year behind the wheel. By turning your car into a university on wheels, you can become one of the most knowledgeable and most skilled people in your profession.

I have spoken to thousands of people who have learned how to make more money by listening to audio programs continuously as they drove around. The very act of listening to audio programs, all by itself, can give you an increase of one half percent per week and more over time.

6. Magic Questions

Ask yourself the two ?Magic Questions? after every meeting and every event of importance in your life. The first question is, ?What did I do right?? And the second question is, ?What would I do differently, next time??

By reviewing your performance immediately after every meeting, sales call, and presentation, you will become better and better, faster than you can imagine.

The answers to both of these questions are positive. By reviewing what you did right and what you would do differently next time, you program into your mind a predisposition to be even better the next time out. If you take a few minutes and write down everything you did right and everything you would do differently immediately after a call or presentation, you can double and triple the speed at which you learn and grow and improve in your work.

7. Learn to Appreciate

The final point is to treat everyone you meet like a million dollar customer. Treat every single person, at home and at work, as if they were the most important person in the world. Since everybody believes that he or she is the most important person in the world, when you treat them as if they were, they appreciate your recognition and acknowledgment more than you can imagine.

By setting financial freedom and personal finance accumulation as your goals, and then by implementing proper financial planning on the one hand to get better and better at what you do while on the other hand saving more and more of what you earn, you will become financially independent, if not a self-made millionaire in the years ahead.

Marshall McLuhan proposed one way (among others) to understand any particular human innovation: asking what earlier innovations, inventions, form(s) of media/technology, does this recall? An interesting exercise to do with Alfred Korzybski's General-Semantics (GS).?

Despite its potentially confusing name, GS is not primarily focused on language and 'meaning' as commonly understood.
Korzybski explicitly said that he was investigating human nature, i.e., time-binding, which he considered the defining activity of human existence. After his first, 1921 book Manhood of Humanity, where he explored time-binding and it's implications, he spent the rest of his life exploring the mechanism of time-binding, how it works and the practical application of this understanding by individuals.?

It boils down to the old stoical adage: live according to nature. Which means in part, finding out about your own species and individual natures. The stoics, saw human capacity for 'reason' as what differentiated us from animals, and they taught their students practical ways to apply 'reason' in their lives.?

I have found no better way to understand Korzybski's work and its place in the long span of human intellectual achievement, than to see him as one of the great figures in the stoic tradition though he did not emphasize that. His work appears to me a great contribution to that still living stream of practical wisdom for living.?

Book Review of Reggie Joiner & Carey Nieuwhof's Parenting ...

Orange ? the World?s most beautiful color has been given a whole new meaning. ?In Parenting Beyond Your Capacity, Orange is defined as combining the Light of the church (Yellow), with the love of your family(Red), providing a guide and understanding on the parent?s and the church?s role and importance in your children?s life. ??When you think orange you see that two combined influences make a greater impact than just two influences? Reggie Joiner and Carey Nieuwhof explain. ?I know everyone?s heard the saying ?It takes a village to raise a child? and that?s the approach they take in this book. ? The Authors give five values to help you parent beyond your capacity.

The five family values are Widen the circle: ?Being around other adults that you trust. There will be a time when your kids will look to other adults with questions and you want them to go to people that will give a similar answer that you would. ?Imagine the end: The goal for my kids are to be as much like christ as they can be. ?That?s what is most important in the end so that is what I focus on day to day. ?Fight for the heart: ?Unconditional love in the home for the health of the kids. ?Create a rhythm: ?Building my kids sense of purpose in everyday activities and experiences. ?Make it personal: ?Let your kids see you growing and striving in your own character and faith because we know that they will mimic us.

Shelbyville Community Church is a family that God has brought together. ?My kids and I have experienced this greatly and this book opened my eyes to this concept even more. Another thing explained is the ?stock family syndrome? or a perfect family. ?We all have that picture of the way we want our family to be, Perfect. ?Or the way we think other families are. But in reality all families are broken. ??God is more interested in using broken people then creating a better picture?.

Parenting Beyond Your Capacity is a must read for all families. ?One of the best parenting books I have yet to read. ?Another thing i loved were at the end of each chapter were ?Discussion Questions?. ?So that?s great if you choose to read this in a book club or as a study for small group, or you can do what I did and read it by yourself. ? Reggie Joiner And Carey Nieuwhof explain parenting techniques without making you feel like a bad parent and without listing a bunch on new tasks you need to start doing. ?I recommend this book above any parenting book I have read yet. ?And I also recommend it to anyone at church who works in the children?s ministry, ?they need to understand how important their role is in the village of each child.

This review was written by Hailey Siegel. ?She is a mom, a Children?s Ministry Team member, and an SCC Member. ?If you would like to get a copy of Parenting Beyond Your Capacity by Reggie Joiner and Carey Nieuwhof, please check out Amazon.com or see Evan or Jason and ask for a copy.

vbk-bpo_118181f.jpgThe business process outsourcing industry offers job opportunities for new graduates and professionals, such as nurses, accountants and engineers.

Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) president and CEO Benedict Hernandez said the industry offers a hundred thousand IT-BPO jobs for financial analysts, engineers, accountants, doctors and nurses, artists, business graduates, and other professionals on its website.

BPAP launched the career portal to increase awareness of career opportunities in the IT-BPO industry.

BPAP senior executive director Gillian Virata said many still don?t know that IT-BPO has 20 different segments, employs 640,000 Filipinos and generated $11 billion in revenues last year.

?We have jobs in IT, software development, customer service, finance and accounting, health care, legal, creative services, and engineering. New graduates and established professionals don?t have to go abroad for international, well-paying jobs,? she said.

To attract potential employees, BPAP created a Facebook page and Twitter account. Hernandez said there has been a positive response from jobseekers so far.

?We are doing this campaign to address a potential talent gap that could impact growth of IT-BPO. There are a lot of amazing opportunities within the industry and the creation of the ?Work Abroad. Live Here? portal is just one piece of a larger campaign to acquaint graduates and professionals who are considering a career shift with opportunities in the IT-BPO industry,? he said.

Last month, the ADB said it was giving a P27.3 million grant to support skills enhancement for the IT-BPO industry. The funding will go to training programs for college students and professors.

?The Philippines has been the global leader in providing customer relationship management (CRM) voice services since 2010. Now, non-voice services are rapidly expanding. This year, our goal is to generate 120,000 jobs to attain our goal of employing 1.3 million Filipinos by 2016. With the support from our government and the other institutions, we expect to meet that goal,? Hernandez said. Source

CPI: $63.5M Wis. recall is state's most expensive

Ed Schultz, host of "The Ed Show" on MSNBC, talks with Rachel Maddow about what's at stake in next Tuesday's recall election in Wisconsin.

By Paul AbowdCenter for Public Integrity

Tuesday's recall election of Republican Gov. Scott Walker - a battle that has become a referendum on the future of public sector unions - is the most expensive in Wisconsin history. More than $63.5 million has been spent by candidates and independent groups, the overwhelming majority underwritten by out-of-state sources.?

The record spending total was made possible thanks to the Citizens United U.S. Supreme Court decision, which had the effect of invalidating Wisconsin's century-old ban on independent expenditures by corporations and unions, and a state law that allows unlimited contributions to the incumbent in recall elections.?

The amount spent since November 2011 trounces the state's previous record of $37.4 million, set during the 2010 gubernatorial campaign.

Wisconsin is ground zero in a national fight for unions, which have supported state-based legal and ballot campaigns to overturn laws restricting collective bargaining and automatic dues check offs.

In the first of two debates, Walker vowed to "stand up and take on the powerful special interests," suggesting that national unions have propped up his Democratic challenger, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.?

While Barrett has received about 26 percent of his $4 million in campaign donations from outside the Badger State, Walker has drawn nearly two-thirds of his $30.5 million contributions from out of state, according to campaign filings released May 29. Walker has outraised Barrett 7 ? to 1 since late 2011, though Barrett didn't enter the race until March 20.?

?"It's big time," said Mike McCabe, director of the campaign finance watchdog Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, which compiled the numbers. "We have a level of outside interference in this election that the state has never seen before."?

Union money pours in
Campaign contributions tell only part of the story. National unions have kept Barrett's campaign alive by funding outside groups dedicated to defeating Walker.?

More than a year since Walker limited collective bargaining rights for most public employees, the nation's three largest public unions -- the National Education Association (NEA), American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) -- have channeled at least $2 million from their treasuries and super PACs to two Wisconsin-based independent expenditure groups.

The American Federation of Teachers, United Food and Commercial Workers, Teamsters, and the United Autoworkers have all dipped into their D.C. treasuries for the Wisconsin recall as well.?

The unions, however, have struggled to keep up with Walker's deep-pocketed, anti-union friends -- like billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson and the Republican Governors Association, which received a $1 million contribution from conservative billionaire David Koch in February.?

On March 7, the NEA, the nation's largest union, transferred $3 million to its super PAC, the NEA Advocacy Fund. A week later, that super PAC sent $500,000 to the We Are Wisconsin Political Fund, a state-based independent expenditure group headed by the state AFL-CIO's president. The fund has spent the money on direct mail, phone banking, canvassing and support for other pro-recall groups in the state.?

With access to unlimited corporate and union dollars, independent expenditure groups in Wisconsin may advocate for or against an opponent, but must disclose their donors and spending to the state's Government Accountability Board.?

Jeffrey Phelps / AP

A supporter of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, right, talks with a supporter of Democratic opponent Tom Barrett at a recall election rally on Friday in Milwaukee.

In early April, the SEIU sent two contributions totaling $500,000 to the We are Wisconsin PAC, which makes direct donations to candidates and parties.?

The NEA and SEIU declined to comment for this story.?

A third public sector union based in Washington, D.C., AFSCME, has set up a special account for the Wisconsin battles, which also include recall votes for four GOP state senators. Much of that money has gone to staff a vast, union-funded network of dozens of field offices in the state. Two weeks before the primary, the national union wrote a $500,000 check to bolster We are Wisconsin, which has paid for union staff from Alaska to Massachusetts to assist with the ground game.?

"This election is going to boil down to a turnout game," said AFSCME national spokesman Chris Fleming, whose union has funded campaign staff throughout the state.?

Labor unions had heavily favored former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk to challenge Walker.?

"Let's face it, I wasn't their first choice," said Barrett in May's first debate. AFSCME, a major Falk funder, criticized Barrett during the Democratic primary for trying to wring concessions from Milwaukee public employees.?

But when Falk lost to Barrett in the May 8 Democratic primary, national unions quickly shifted their support to Barrett -- who lost to Walker by 5 points in 2010.?

We are Wisconsin and a second group, the Greater Wisconsin Committee, saw an infusion of union cash for Barrett's second attempt in May. We are Wisconsin got another $500,000 from the NEA' Advocacy Fund on May 7 -- making for a cool million from the teachers union super PAC in under two months.?

The American Federation of Teachers also chipped in $350,000 in May.?

We are Wisconsin has spread its wealth too, sending $1.3 million in May to the independent expenditure arm of Greater Wisconsin, a one-stop -political shop comprised of a 527, a (c)4, a PAC, and an independent expenditure fund.?

In late May, Greater Wisconsin took a $500,000 donation from AFSCME and $900,000 more from the Democratic Governors Association to fuel a final online, radio, and TV ad push in the week ahead of the vote.?

Walker's campaign did not return calls for comment, but the governor called Greater Wisconsin "a front group for all the union money coming in," during the first of two May debates.?

Union leaders say the opposition to Walker is home grown.?

"I would tell Walker to look in his backyard," says Fleming of AFSCME. "There were people from Eau Claire and Waukesha and Green Bay, putting together the largest demonstrations at the Capitol since the Vietnam War."?

Super donors for Walker
Walker, meanwhile, has benefitted from the state's election finance rules that allowed his campaign to raise unlimited contributions from individuals after recall petitions were filed in November 2011. His challengers could take no more than $10,000 from individuals.?

Through April, Walker's top three donors combined gave more than challenger Barrett's campaign had raised overall. ?Four of Walker's top seven donors are out-of-state billionaires, including AmWay founder and former Michigan gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos, and casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, who each gave $250,000 to Walker.?

Adelson has given $26.5 million to super PACs in the 2012 election -- most of it to Winning Our Future, a pro-Newt Gingrich super PAC - making him the most prolific super PAC contributor so far, according to a Center for Public Integrity report. Though he is known primarily for his support of Israel, Adelson also has an extensive history of bitter disputes with unions who want to organize at his exclusively non-union casinos.?

When Citizens United came down, it didn't just nullify Wisconsin's 1905 ban on corporate campaign cash, it also plunged much of the state's campaign finance reporting into darkness.?

"Because corporate and labor expenditures were previously illegal, there were no disclosure laws to regulate their spending," said McCabe. "There's been a precipitous drop off in transparency."?

Since Citizens United, Wisconsin's Government Accountability Board requires independent expenditure groups to register as so-called "1.91 groups," named for the state rule that created them. Of the more than $63 million spent in the race, $22 million has come from these groups -- $16.3 million of it from Walker supporters -- according to the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign.?

Similar to federal super PACs, 1.91 groups can raise and spend unlimited corporate or union dollars and urge voters to support or oppose a candidate. Also, like federal super PACs, they must report their donors -- except when they can avoid it.

The Republican Governors Association has spent roughly $4 million on campaign ads through its Right Direction Wisconsin PAC since April 23. But because the RGA's PAC is based out-of-state, it only has to disclose to state regulators its donations coming from inside Wisconsin, a glaring loophole.?

Of its most recent $4 million outlay, the RGA raised only a little over $7,000 from inside the state.?

The RGA does have to report donors to the IRS, and its 2012 first quarter filing reveals a $500,000 donation from the Chamber of Commerce and a $1 million February contribution from Koch.?

McCabe says the 1.91 groups that are based in-state, like We Are Wisconsin and Greater Wisconsin, also have ways around disclosure rules. The nonprofit arms of these organizations don?t have to disclose donors, and can funnel unlimited money from undisclosed sources into independent expenditure funds ? making the source of a lot of campaign cash ?nearly impossible to track.??

?Outrageous ? ?wrong, but ? legal?
For example, Greater Wisconsin transferred $191,000 from its political fund to its independent expenditure fund in early May. The money would be spent on ads supporting Barrett or opposing Walker. Because its political fund does not have to report donors, no one knows who paid for the ads ? an end-around the state?s disclosure rules that parallels campaign financing tricks at the federal level.?

Then there are issue ad groups which raise and spend unlimited funds, and do not register or disclose their spending. However, they are barred from urging voters to support or oppose a candidate.?

The Campaign for Wisconsin Democracy gathers purchasing data from media outlets, and estimates about $8.5 million in issue ads have been bought during the recall.?

The right-wing groups Americans for Prosperity and Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, known as ?Wisconsin?s Business Voice,? and the anti-union Center for Union Facts have made roughly 75 percent of those purchases. Greater Wisconsin has spent about $2 million, according to McCabe.?

Despite the record fundraising numbers and the unprecedented degree of outside influence, neither Walker?s haul from out-of-state billionaires, nor the national union cash infusion breaks campaign finance law.?

In total, outside spending made by independent expenditure groups and Issue ad organizations, totals $30.5 million in the recall election ? well over half of which has been contributed by undisclosed sources, according to the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign.

?All the spending is outrageous and wrong, but it?s also legal,? says McCabe.??

Capital versus people
McCabe says the unions better bank on a ground game, because they can?t compete long-term with corporations.?

?I always thought it was foolhardy to play a capital-intensive game when the unions have people, and their adversaries have capital,? he says. ?They just can?t keep up.??

The intense spending by outside groups has made a lot of Wisconsinites feel powerless.?

Elena Barham is a West Madison High School senior who helped form the Students for Wisconsin PAC. So far, the group has raised about $30 from T-shirt sales.?

?Our goal is not money-based,? said Barham, whose group has focused on voter registration among young voters. ?It?s about showing that a grassroots effort could have an impact.??

Barham?s PAC produced a Web ad critical of Walker?s cuts to education and is canvassing in pivotal Dane County ? where Barrett needs to win big to have a chance.?

At school, Barham has the difficult task of rallying enthusiasm.?

?High school kids see all this big money and say, ?I don?t have a million dollars,?? she said. ?It?s hard to convince people of their political efficacy ? it?s discouraging.?

The Center for Public Integrity is a nonprofit, independent investigative news outlet.? To read more of CPI?s stories go to iwatchnews.org.
