Book Review of Reggie Joiner & Carey Nieuwhof's Parenting ...

Orange ? the World?s most beautiful color has been given a whole new meaning. ?In Parenting Beyond Your Capacity, Orange is defined as combining the Light of the church (Yellow), with the love of your family(Red), providing a guide and understanding on the parent?s and the church?s role and importance in your children?s life. ??When you think orange you see that two combined influences make a greater impact than just two influences? Reggie Joiner and Carey Nieuwhof explain. ?I know everyone?s heard the saying ?It takes a village to raise a child? and that?s the approach they take in this book. ? The Authors give five values to help you parent beyond your capacity.

The five family values are Widen the circle: ?Being around other adults that you trust. There will be a time when your kids will look to other adults with questions and you want them to go to people that will give a similar answer that you would. ?Imagine the end: The goal for my kids are to be as much like christ as they can be. ?That?s what is most important in the end so that is what I focus on day to day. ?Fight for the heart: ?Unconditional love in the home for the health of the kids. ?Create a rhythm: ?Building my kids sense of purpose in everyday activities and experiences. ?Make it personal: ?Let your kids see you growing and striving in your own character and faith because we know that they will mimic us.

Shelbyville Community Church is a family that God has brought together. ?My kids and I have experienced this greatly and this book opened my eyes to this concept even more. Another thing explained is the ?stock family syndrome? or a perfect family. ?We all have that picture of the way we want our family to be, Perfect. ?Or the way we think other families are. But in reality all families are broken. ??God is more interested in using broken people then creating a better picture?.

Parenting Beyond Your Capacity is a must read for all families. ?One of the best parenting books I have yet to read. ?Another thing i loved were at the end of each chapter were ?Discussion Questions?. ?So that?s great if you choose to read this in a book club or as a study for small group, or you can do what I did and read it by yourself. ? Reggie Joiner And Carey Nieuwhof explain parenting techniques without making you feel like a bad parent and without listing a bunch on new tasks you need to start doing. ?I recommend this book above any parenting book I have read yet. ?And I also recommend it to anyone at church who works in the children?s ministry, ?they need to understand how important their role is in the village of each child.

About the Author

I am just a humble Children's Pastor, trying to figure things out as I go. I have over 15 years experience in ministry, but Children's Ministry is by far where I need to be. I love helping families raise their children the way God wants to and when they realize that they are the strongest spiritual influence in their kids' lives and own it, that's when everything is worth it! I am married to a great lady who hasn't traded me in for a new model yet! Tricia is my partner in crime and I am one of those goofy guys who know that he was way out of his league when we got together. I love to talk about family ministry and how it effects everyone differently. Feel free to contact me if you would like to talk or just vent!
