Essential info: It's no secret that Philadelphia is a hotbed for hip-hop talent. In the 1980s, it was Schoolly D who helped put Philly on the map with his 1986 hip-hop classic "P.S.K. What Does It Mean?" Of course, the Fresh Prince followed a few years later, then the Roots. In the late 1990s, Jay-Z introduced Beanie Sigel to the world, and Maybach Music's Meek Mill is currently the city's most recognizable rap figure.

Still more and more raw rap talent continues to break out of Illadelphia's borders, and the latest contender, Tone Trump, was handpicked by Young Jeezy. These days, a street rapper can't get a bigger co-sign.

"A couple of days ago, I officially signed my deal with Young Jeezy, CTE World, and [it's been] a lot of years of hard work, blood, sweat and tears, risking my life," Trump told Mixtape Daily when he was in New York on Wednesday. "I make street music and I just signed with the biggest street artist in the world."

"It would've been a dream come true to get a so-called record deal with any label probably, but not too many artists get to sign with their favorite rapper or their favorite artists," he said with much admiration. "When I was in the mix and coming up in the grind, his music got me and mines through a lot."

After TT and the Snowman collaborated on Trump's 2011 street single "Afghan," rumors began to swirl of a CTE signing, but the pair finally announced their union earlier this week. Jeezy, Trump and their now-unified crews celebrated over drinks. "It was a toast; it was a boss' toast," Tone said, setting the scene. "Snow, he bought about 40 bottles for the whole crew and it was like all rosé and it was one bottle of Ace of Spades, he put that to the side and gave it to me."

More than the deal, it was Jeezy's commitment that the Philly spitter really admires. "He said a few words, that I'm gonna keep private forever, that really touched my heart, and it meant a lot," Trump said. "I even took the bottle back home like a trophy."

Is Tone Trump's deal with Young Jeezy a good fit for the Philly rapper? Let us know what you think in the comments!

How to Safely Invest in Gold Stocks - Simit Patel | George Jarkesy ...

It?s widely known in the investment community that gold has been one of the best investment opportunities of the first decade in the new millennium. Gold was trading at around $250 per ounce at the turn of the century; 11 years later, it?s over $1500 and even briefly soared past $1,900 in September of 2011. The reason? Gold is a function of sovereign debt and currency instability; we live in a world where nation-states are drowning in debt, and the odds are growing that the only way they can manage to pay off this debt is by expanding the money supply ? i.e. printing money, an event that will most likely have the effect of significantly devaluing the currency. As investors see prices rising due to expansion of the money supply (which continues to?soar to new all-time highs), they naturally grow fearful of watching the value of their savings erode; and thus, they turn to gold, which historically has been the asset to turn to when governments destroy the value of money.

This is crucial to note because it tells us why gold is rallying, and how long it may continue to rally. So long as the sovereign debt crisis remains unresolved and even unacknowledged, the odds favor a continued rally in gold. And given that the nation-states of the world are facing bond coupon payments?in excess of $7.6 trillion in 2012, it seems as though the best may be yet to come for gold. Buying gold bullion is the first step towards investing in this massive wealth transfer out of currencies and into precious metals, although for those with appetite for some risk and looking for an even stronger upside, gold stocks may be of interest.

Of course, the more risky the asset, the more important risk management becomes. Here are three guidelines I use to mitigate risk while preserving opportunity for profit via gold stocks:

1. Focus on royalty stocks.?Royalty stocks can be thought of as similar to the venture capital of the mining industry. These firms focus on raising lots of cash and investing in lots of mines in exchange for a royalty stream of income when the mine goes into production. Royalty stocks have two major advantages: (1) they typically do not have to bear the cost or responsibility of mining, passing that off instead to a joint venture partner and (2) they are able to invest in many mines, and thus offer investors a valuable means of diversification. My two favorite royalty stocks are Franco Nevada (FNV.NYSE) and Eurasian Minerals (EMXX.NYSE).

2. Follow the Rule of 2.?The ?Rule of 2? is simply a strategy that calls for exiting half the position if price doubles. This rule, which is especially important for controlling risk when speculating in tiny stocks that are prone to much greater volatility, helps investors control risk while still allowing investors to hold positions for the duration of long trends. By taking half the position off if price doubles, investors are taking back the original capital they invested, thus allowing them to ?play with the house?s money? ? to borrow jargon used by professional gamblers. Because investors have taking their original capital off the table, they can patiently wait for the trend to fully develop and for the maximum profit opportunity to be revealed.

3. Gold peaks before stocks do.?A careful examination of gold?s bull market in the 1970s reveals that gold peaked BEFORE gold stocks did. I consider it somewhat likely this scenario will repeat this time around in gold?s bull market. From this perspective, the first sign that that the market may be getting ready to peak is if gold makes a strong, parabolic move ? such as doubling within 6 months. So far we have not seen anywhere near this type of price acceleration in gold. When gold starts to fall after a parabolic rise but gold stocks are still rising, it may be time to start cashing out of gold stocks.

4. Take direct registration of your shares.?There are several ways to own stock shares, although the two most common are direct registration and street registration. Street registration is the default option that occurs whenever an order is placed via an online broker and no request to the contrary has been made. Street registration actually puts the shares in the broker?s name, which puts shareholders at risk; if the brokerage firm collapses, the shares will be gone. Direct registration, on the other hand, puts the stock in your name. Our current financial system is fraught with instability, and so I think direct registration is a preferable option for stocks investors plan to hold for the duration of the bull market.

By following these four guidelines, investors can safely participate in what may end up being a bull market that transforms the global monetary system.

First lady's book: On growing seeds, healthy kids

WASHINGTON (AP) ? From the beginning, Michelle Obama's kitchen garden has been an overachiever, churning out more peppers, parsley and eggplant than expected, and generating interest that ? yes, really ? crosses oceans.

Now, the first lady has added a 271-page book to her gardening resume, and Americans can read all about the planting misses that came with the hits, get tips on gardening at home, and, Mrs. Obama hopes, draw some inspiration that just might change their lives. Oh, and if it happens to help her husband's re-election campaign, that would be nice, too.

Lofty goals for a book about a garden.

In "American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America," Mrs. Obama holds out the raised vegetable beds on the South Lawn as "an expression of my hopes" for the nation's children. "Just as each seed we plant has the potential to become something extraordinary, so does every child," she writes.

The $30 book, released Tuesday by Crown Publishers, traces how a city kid from the South Side of Chicago who became a working mother and then a political spouse found herself fretting on that first planting day, March 20, 2009, about whether an L-shaped stretch of soil would prove fertile ground for a national conversation "about the food we eat, the lives we lead, and how all of that affects our children."

The book, which answers that question with a resounding yes, arrives just in time for her husband's re-election campaign.

And while the book is decidedly non-political, that fits perfectly with the Obama campaign's view that the first lady can do her husband a world of good simply by pushing the non-threatening causes such as healthy living that have made her a far more popular figure than the president himself. Mrs. Obama's favorability rating in the latest AP-GfK poll was 70 percent, compared with 58 percent for her husband.

The book's release comes with a flurry of media appearances. She's already been a TV frequent flyer to promote her "Let's Move" campaign to combat childhood obesity ? doing pushups with Ellen DeGeneres, playing tug-of-war with Jimmy Fallon in the White House and serving veggie pizza to Jay Leno. She says she gets asked about the garden wherever she goes, around the world.

The book is chock full of colorful, glossy photos of luscious-looking vegetables, complete with a cover picture in which the first lady's blouse seems to be color-coordinated with the eggplants in her bulging basket of produce. Bo, the popular family dog, gets plenty of cameo appearances. There are maps tracing the growth of the garden over the past three years, and stories about community gardens around the country. Even a how-to on creating a compost bin.

The book is divided into four sections marking the seasons, and includes a complement of recipes for each.

There are inside stories about planting travails that will ring true with any weekend gardener: pumpkins that wouldn't grow, cantaloupes that tasted blah, blackberry bushes that wouldn't play nice with the raspberry bushes and an invasion of cucumber beetles, among them. The first lady makes clear she's not the one doing most of the hoeing and weeding, crediting school kids, White House chefs and grounds crew and enthusiastic volunteers from all over the White House chain of command with providing lots of manpower.

And there are bits of historical trivia woven throughout: John Adams ordered up the first White House garden, but it was never harvested after he lost re-election. Thomas Jefferson was obsessed with trying to grow a four-foot-long cucumber. Heiress Rachel "Bunny" Mellon, at 101 now a figure in the John Edwards' corruption trial, helped redesign the Rose Garden for President John Kennedy.

There are also bits of personal history: Mrs. Obama's father worked as a boy on one of the vegetable trucks that would deliver produce to neighborhoods, and had a reputation for sneaking pieces of fruit. Her mother's family had a plot in a neighborhood victory garden on the corner of an alley, and the kids had to eat their vegetables or go to bed without supper.

It is a tradition for first ladies to use books to advance their causes. Hillary Clinton wrote the best-seller "It Takes a Village," about the importance of community in raising children; and Laura Bush collaborated with daughter Jenna on a picture book about a reluctant reader, with "Read All About It!"

This is Michelle Obama's first book. She got no advance payment, and plans to donate all her proceeds to the National Park Foundation for programs that promote gardening and healthy eating, and to help care for the White House garden.

Improve Your Skills And Meet New People With Online Gaming

When you participate in online gaming communities, you may get proficient with a left handed mouse, but you learn lots of other things as well. MMORPGs, or Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games such as World of Warcraft, and Everquest are played daily by massive numbers of people around the world. Some people take gaming very seriously. Others are more casual about it. Which category do you fit into? The main point is to enjoy yourself, but what?s the best way to do this? If you want to improve your gaming skills, this article will give you some ideas.

If you desire to be accepted into any MMORPG (Massive MultiPlayer Online Role Playing Game) community, then you must start staying on top of the news with your game. Doing so is a step above merely owning the equipment like the keyboard shortcuts (shorts) or the fabled left-handed mouse (if you?re a? you know).

You?ll need to spend some time at the right online communities such as sites, blogs, and forums. Why is that important to your success? So that you will know when new patches and fixes for the game are released and when special events happen. Much of these announcements will only be seen in applicable forums or other places.

Be an active member of the team. Many concepts (with MMORPG?s) are the same as traditional team sports. You will be expected to accept instruction and direction in the heat of battle from teammates with more experience.

There will be a time when you also will need to take the same kind of action. It is okay to make sacrifices for your team-playing a way that is different than you are used to can help the team and makes playing more fun for everyone. If you?re not prepared to bend a little and play for the good of the team, then your experience may be short lived in that community. Try to keep the team?s best interest and enjoyment as your priority.

Our treatment of washing machines in this article is not as comprehensive as it can be, but that is only because it is such as wide area of knowledge. We have not placed any particular emphasis on any one thing because we want you to think about them objectively. Whether or not every single point or item will totally apply to you is unknown to us, so we try to present a good overview. You will be best served if your knowledge is broad, and then you can fill in any details with further research. So, just take it a little at a time and learn from the best sources which is always best. We all have the same amount of time each day, but we think what normally occurs is people learn to focus. When you do locate what is meaningful to you, then obviously you will be compelled to focus on that. You can get great feedback simply by asking for it. Getting used to using your left handed mouses or keyboards can be tricky. When you?re meeting people, try asking others if they?re left or right-handed, and if you find someone who is left-handed maybe ask them if they can help you. Always ask for helpful tricks or hints from the people you play against. You will see that many gamers like helping beginners because it gives them a chance to show-off their knowledge. Don?t be shy and brush off someone who comes to you and asks for your help either.

Just have fun when you?re online gaming. When people spend hundreds and thousands of hours creating games; they are made to be fun ? serious fun. Naturally, there are some things you may want to consider if you want to get the most out of it. If you?re left-handed, then get the left-handed mouse and do the shortcuts on the keyboard. Keep in mind about humility and working with a team. Everybody will have a lot more fun when everyone gets along.

One does not have to look far to see how expansive the influence of tumble dryers really is. But just avoid the thought that something is lacking in you if you were caught off guard when this arrived on your doorstep.

Probably the best defense against such situation is paying attention to your thoughts and keeping your eyes wide open. We all know the saying about an ounce of prevention, but still that holds true in very many situations. Have you not ever noticed that about people or even your self? It does seem to be very prevalent in our opinion. Be that as it may, there is never anything wrong with just being informed and taking whatever measures that are necessary or represent common sense.

"It is definitely a passion. Getting the kids in our country to eat healthy," Obama added. "This book is a way to talk about our journey" to better health, she said.

The first lady said that her "Let's Move" campaign to improve fitness, particularly for young people, isn't an attempt to tell people how to live. "That's not really what 'Let's Move' has been about," she said. "This isn't about government telling people what to do."

NYT: US winds down longer benefits for the unemployed

Hundreds of thousands of out-of-work Americans are receiving their final unemployment checks sooner than they expected, even though Congress renewed extended benefits until the end of the year.

The checks are stopping for the people who have the most difficulty finding work: the long-term unemployed. More than five million people have been out of work for longer than half a year. Federal benefit extensions, which supplemented state funds for payments up to 99 weeks, were intended to tide over the unemployed until the job market improved.

In February, when the program was set to expire, Congress renewed it, but also phased in a reduction of the number of weeks of extended aid and effectively made it more difficult for states to qualify for the maximum aid. Since then, the jobless in 23 states have lost up to five months? worth of benefits.

Out of benefits even as job picture improves

Next month, an additional 70,000 people will lose benefits earlier than they presumed, bringing the number of people cut off prematurely this year to close to half a million, according to the National Employment Law Project. That estimate does not include people who simply exhausted the weeks of benefits they were entitled to.

Separate from the Congressional action, some states are making it harder to qualify for the first few months of benefits, which are covered by taxes on employers. Florida, where the jobless rate is 8.7 percent, has cut the number of weeks it will pay and changed its application procedures, with more than half of all applicants now being denied.

The federal extension of jobless benefits has been a contentious issue in Washington. Republicans worry that it prolongs joblessness and say it has not kept the unemployment rate down, while Democrats argue that those out of work have few alternatives and that the checks are one of the most effective forms of stimulus, since most of it is spent immediately.

After the most recent compromise reached in February, another renewal seems unlikely.

The expiration of benefits is one factor contributing to what many economists refer to as a ?fiscal cliff,? or a drag on the economy at the end of this year when tax cuts and recession-related spending measures will all come to an end unless Congress acts. The Congressional Budget Office warned last week that the combination could contribute to another recession next year.

Candace Falkner, 50, got her last unemployment check in mid-May, when extended benefits were curtailed in eight states. Since then she has applied for food stamps and begun a commission-only, door-to-door sales job. Since losing her job two years ago, Ms. Falkner said, she has earned a master?s degree in psychology and applied for work at numerous social service agencies as well as places like Walmart, but no offers came.

Jobless claims steady as labor market grows tepidly

Ms. Falkner, who lives on the outskirts of Chicago, said she was grateful for the checks she received. But when they ended, she said, ?They should have had some program in place to funnel those people back into the job market. Not to just leave them out there cold, saying, ?The job market has improved, but there?s still 60,000 people in the city who can?t find one.? ?

Unemployment is lower than it was when the emergency unemployment extensions were ramped up in November 2009. Now, it is 8.1 percent, down from 9.9 percent then. But it is still far higher than pre-recession norms, and there are more than three job seekers for every opening.

Proponents of extended benefits say the cuts are premature. Chad Stone, the chief economist at the liberal Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, said Congress had never before put the brakes on extended benefits when the labor market was so weak. ?It?s moving in the wrong direction, and it?s occurring at a time when unemployment is very high,? he said.

Conservative economists and political leaders have argued that unemployment benefits prolong joblessness and simply transfer wealth from one area of the economy to another without contributing to growth.

Kevin A. Hassett, director of economic policy studies at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, said, ?I haven?t liked the 99-week solution from the beginning because it creates an environment where people are subsidized to become a structural unemployment problem.?

Still, he is troubled by the latest developments. ?If you just reduce the weeks of unemployment for people already unemployed but don?t do anything else, it?s a bad deal,? he said, ?because they?re already about the worst-off people in society.?

He points to alternatives like using unemployment money to encourage entrepreneurship or paying benefits in a lump sum, rather than over time, to encourage people to find work faster.

Most states offer 26 weeks of unemployment benefits, plus the federal extensions that kicked in after the financial crash.

The number of extra weeks available by state is determined by several factors, including the state?s unemployment rate and whether it is higher than three years earlier. So states like California have had benefits cut even though the unemployment rate there is still almost 11 percent.

?Benefits have ended not because economic conditions have improved, but because they have not significantly deteriorated in the past three years,? Hannah Shaw, a researcher at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, wrote in a blog post. In May, an estimated 95,000 people lost benefits in California.

Flat jobless claims raise worries about job market

After the recession, 99 weeks became a symbol of the plight of the jobless, with those who exhausted their benefits calling themselves ?99 weekers? or ?99ers.? But by the end of September, the extended benefits will end in the last three states providing 99 weeks of assistance ? Nevada, New Jersey and Rhode Island.

Some states have tightened eligibility as well. Nationwide, most people apply for benefits by phone. Last August, Florida began requiring people to apply online and to complete a 45-minute test to assess their job skills, according to a complaint submitted to the federal labor secretary by the National Employment Law Project and Florida Legal Services.

The complaint said that applicants with limited Internet access or English skills, disabilities or difficulty reading had effectively been shut out, and that failure to complete the assessment was illegally being used to deny benefits. Denials have soared; now just over half of applicants are rejected. Nationally, 30 percent of applicants are rejected, according to the law project.

The changes have saved the state $2.7 million, according to James Miller, a spokesman for the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. The state?s unemployment rate, he pointed out, has declined for 10 straight months. ?The Department of Economic Opportunity provides accommodations to individuals with barriers to filing their claims,? he wrote in an e-mail. ?D.E.O. welcomes any review and is certain that Florida?s statutory changes are in full compliance with federal law.?

The Labor Department is reviewing Florida?s unemployment program in response to multiple complaints, a spokesman said.

This story, "Extended federal unemployment benefits begin to wind down," originally appeared in The New York Times.

Loyola (Md.) beats Maryland 9-3 for lacrosse title

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) ? Top-seeded Loyola of Maryland beat Maryland 9-3 Monday to win the NCAA men's lacrosse title behind Eric Lusby's four goals. Lusby set a record with 17 goals in the tournament.

The Greyhounds captured their first national lacrosse championship and finished the season at 18-1. Maryland (12-6) lost the title game for the second straight year.

Chris Layne added three assists for the Greyhounds, whose only loss this season was to Johns Hopkins in overtime on April 28.

The two Maryland schools are separated by about 30 miles, but it was only their 21st meeting and first since the Terrapins' 19-8 victory in the 1998 national semifinals.

EU Privacy Directive: Why All The Fuss? Just Be Open With Users

markEU Cookie legislation is now in force across Europe, but in a last minute change on Friday, the UK's information commissioner amended the way it will be implemented in the UK. It's now the case that sites will only have to obtain 'implied consent' from users not explicit consent. This is much friendlier for businesses but means the UK is now out of the step with the EU on privacy online and the transparency of cookies. In the middle of a recession, UK businesses probably won't lose too much sleep. This is a much more pragmatic approach and most websites have yet to even comply with the legislation. In this guest post, Mark Macdonald, of Skimlinks argues sites should still consider being up-front with users about their use of cookies.

Pakistani Bishop Decries Theft of Church Land

LAHORE, Pakistan, MAY 25, 2012 (Zenit.org).- A Pakistani bishop is decrying the government take-over of Church-owned land, and the destruction of properties -- including a homeless shelter -- at the site.

The center was confiscated and razed in January, Aid to the Church in Need reported.

Bishop Sebastian Francis Shaw, apostolic administrator of Lahore Archdiocese, said that the land where the center stood still had not been returned ? despite promises from the provincial government.

Talking to Aid to the Church in Need, Bishop Shaw said: ?It looks like empty promises. Even after a meeting with a government official who assured us of an immediate return, nothing happened.?

The centre in Lahore?s Garhi Shahu district housed a day centre for the elderly, a sewing school for girls and other projects run by the Church ? as well as a chapel.

Bishop Shaw said: ?If the provincial government restores the property to us, they won?t compensate us for tearing down the building. We have to pay for the reconstruction ourselves ? this is unjust.?

The government has demanded that a Church-run school be built on the land ? as a precondition for its return ? and insisted this should be financed by the diocese.

Bishop Shaw said: ?It?s not impossible that this is just another method of delaying restitution, as the government may be hoping that we can?t fulfil this condition.

?As Christians, we?re an easy victim for the government, as they don?t have to fear any outbursts of violence.?

How To Make Money Fast Through PPC Advertising | Online ...

?

The business model behind PPC advertising from the perspective of an affiliate marketer is not a new one. Generally speaking, an affiliate purchases space on which to advertise from web properties that are heavily trafficked. Using creative advertising and good targeting, he then tries to generate sales leads for the companies he?s affiliated with in exchange for a commission. If there?s a big difference between the two, then he has profited, and it?s certainly possible to make money fast by using this method.

Of course, this is an extremely simplified version of how the system works, and the devil is always in the details. There are literally thousands of affiliate programs out there that will pay commissions, and the diversity of the advertisements that an affiliate can generate and strategically place is an element of the business that?s only limited by his imagination. PPC advertising has been the vehicle to riches for some people, but as with any fledgling business, the risk to lose money during the testing phase is significant. Knowing what kinds of people can typically be found browsing a certain source of traffic, and knowing how to create the right combination of ads and offers in order to drive those users to take action is a science that requires a lot of dialing in. It?s not uncommon for people that are new to the industry to never make it beyond this stage.

So, the question remains, what?s the most surefire way to make money fast through paid ads? A lot of experienced affiliates will tell you that the best place to start is in social media. Social networking sites generally have a learning curve that?s less steep for a number of reasons. For one thing, a lot of them already have their own self-serve advertising platforms built in, and are able to show advertisers exactly how their standard ad display slots will appear on the end user?s screen. They also play host to absolutely vast numbers of users that represent a wide variety of demographics and interest categories, and the network?s advertising control panel will allow advertisers to target who their promotions will appear to based on any of these criteria.

This makes social advertising far easier than starting off by trying to learn the ropes with ad networks that display on smaller, more niche web sites. Rather than having to have an understanding of the type of traffic that one?s ads are trying to sell to for each major property, running ads on social networks confines the entire process to a single location. Additionally, most of the major social platforms have their own tracking systems built-in. After running test traffic, it?s possible to quickly check which ads are getting clicks, and what those clicks are costing compared to the overall advertising budget. This allows users to manage their advertising accounts effectively over the life of their campaign. For anyone that?s trying to get their own ad-based online business off the ground, there are few places to begin learning that are kinder to the type of mistakes that most new marketers are likely to make.

Is Equality Important in Your Marriage? Part 3 | Advice in Love ...

Scott started our meeting. ?I think I?ve found a solution to Karen?s feeling unequal,? he said with excitement.
?What do you have in mind?? I inquired.
?It?s a surprise,? Scott answered. ?I wanted to share it with you right here,? he said as he turned toward Karen.
?What are you talking about?? she asked.
?I realized recently that no matter how long you work at your job because of your pay scale you will never be able to save very much for your retirement,? Scott said. ?I decided to give you a gift that would make us equal. I split my retirement savings. I put half my account in a new account under your name. It?s yours to do with as you please. It means you are financially independent. You aren?t forced to be married to me because of money.?
?How do you feel about this?? I asked Karen.
?You have surprised me!? she said looking at Scott. ?I know how hard you?ve worked to create your company and to save for our retirement. I feel deeply touched that you would split equally what you have put away.?
Scott smiled. ?I hope it can solve our equality issue,? he said.
?Not really,? Karen responded. ?It doesn?t make me feel equal. In fact, my awareness that I could never earn and put away what you are giving me makes me feel less equal. It?s like what I see with the people I counsel on disability. The money they get from the government helps them take care of their needs, but it doesn?t make them feel better about themselves. Most the people I see on welfare feel less good about themselves.?
?Well I didn?t intend to make you feel worse about yourself,? Scott said. ?I wanted you to know how much you mean to me. I gave you the gift to express my love and gratitude to you as my wife of twenty-two years. Your support has helped me earn what I?ve saved.?
?I know you intended to help Karen through your gift,? I said. ?Like many gifts, however, it has unintended consequences that you might not have anticipated in your eagerness to help Karen.?
?I know you meant to help me,? Karen responded. ?The money does help me feel secure about the future and being taken care of. But having the same amount of money you have doesn?t make me feel equal.?
?What can I do then,? Scott asked, ?to help you feel like we?re equals??
?You?ve already done it,? Karen replied, ?when you accepted my offer to take charge of our finances. By agreeing to my managing our finances you gave me the opportunity to show how I can help.? She paused. ?Equality isn?t about money or power,? she continued. ?It?s about how we see ourselves and how we feel inside.?
?Is there anything more Scott can do to help you with that?? I asked Karen.
?Scott doesn?t need to rescue me!? she answered. ?I am not a victim.? Her tone was firm. ?Even though I grew up through some abusive experiences with drinking in my family I have chosen not to see myself as a victim. When I used to feel like a victim I got sympathy from my friends but the price of remaining stuck and not feeling good about myself was very high. Blaming others kept me from taking responsibility and making the best of my abilities. I saw friends of mine get stuck in victimhood and I didn?t respect them. What helped me grow was taking opportunities, like I?m now doing managing our finances. I am demonstrating what I can do. I respect myself by doing the job well and Scott might appreciate me too.?
?Are you saying that your own self-respect comes first?? I asked Karen.
?Absolutely,? she answered. ?My self-evaluation has to come first. I don?t want to depend on someone else to make me feel good. It is helpful, at the same time, when Scott honestly validates me for the good job I?m doing. His caring for me and treating me with respect, which he is now doing, is how he helps me.? Following a short pause, she added: ?His feeling good about himself also helps because I see him respect himself and that inspires me to value myself.?
?I learned to be a rescuer growing up,? Scott responded. ?Like Karen I, too, grew up in a family with alcohol problems. I learned to rescue members of my family. I got praise from other people, but it caused me to neglect myself. I became needless and want-less. I didn?t learn how to be clear about what I needed and wanted. As a consequence I became resentful. That?s been a cause of my resentment with you when I didn?t feel like you were doing your share,? he said to Karen.
?When you are being the rescuer and over-functioning it?s easy to become a scorekeeper,? I said. ?You keep track of what your partner does compared to what you do. Scorekeeping is toxic to a marriage. It bases marriage on competition rather than on cooperation.?
?I?ve been a scorekeeper in comparing what Karen does with what I do,? Scott said. ?I see that it?s been bad for our marriage.?
?I was an habitual scorekeeper,? I said. ?My wife and I loved to go to the movies but we preferred different movies. We agreed to trade off whose movie we saw. When we watched one of her movies I used to insist that we go to my movie the very next time. I felt cheated if we didn?t.?
?What changed it?? Karen asked.
?I realized there was a third presence in our marriage,? I explained. ? I started out believing there was just my wife and me. When someone asked me how important our relationship was to me I woke up. I saw that our relationship was very important to me. I wanted to nurture our relationship to make it grow. That?s when I awakened to doing what is good for our relationship. When I went to my wife?s preferred movie several times in a row I felt good about nurturing our relationship. I stopped keeping score.?
?When I realized just recently that my scorekeeping was hurting our marriage,? Scott said, ?I started working on giving it up. I learned that what works best for me is to do the things I see that need doing regardless of what Karen has done. When she sees what I have done she is likewise inspired to do what she sees that needs doing. It generally evens out, and even if it doesn?t, I still can appreciate what I have done for our welfare and feel good about that.?
?I know there were times when you were score-keeping,? Karen responded, ?and I felt your resentment. It felt like you saw yourself as superior and I resented it. I wanted to bring you down. Sometimes I made critical remarks that I knew would hurt you. I?m sure that played a part in our stopping talking. I learned that I felt worse about myself as a consequence of my getting back at you.?
?It is a mistake to try to get equal by bringing someone else down,? I said. ?It doesn?t work because you bring yourself down too. The goal of life is not to win; the goal to grow and share. We get equal by lifting ourselves up and helping others lift themselves. When we want for others what we want for ourselves and act accordingly,? I said, ?everyone rises.?
?In keeping with that spirit,? Karen said looking at Scott, ?what I would appreciate is your putting back into your retirement account the money you gave me, and for you to continue to manage it. In my work I have witnessed too many unintended consequences from trying to make people equal. To administer equality requires a vast government and everyone loses their freedom?-those who are taxed as well as those who receive the distributions as they grow more dependent.?
?Would it feel easier for you to be giving to Karen through the government?? I asked Scott.
?Not at all,? he replied. ?It would feel totally impersonal. My giving to Karen was personal, which is what made it special. And I was choosing to do it which made it generous. Paying taxes feels like charity through intimidation?if you refuse you are fined or put in prison.?
?Is there something else Scott might do that would help?? I asked Karen.
?Yes,? she responded. ?We need to create a good estate plan together.?
Turning to Scott she continued: ?You could find a good estate lawyer for us to draw up our wills and create a trust. With the lawyer?s help we can plan for how to best deal with the illness or death of either of us, how to take care of whoever survives, and how to care for our children and their children.?
?I like the way we are coming together,? Scott said to Karen, ?and especially how I see you as a partner who respects herself and is helping us create a stronger family.?
?There is one more idea I have,? Karen said to Scott. ?I have been talking with my best friend who is urging me to come back to church. Now that I have more time with the children gone I would like to be involved with our church community. People there have been very supportive of us. I would love to have you join me. I believe it would be good for us and would allow us to help others,? Karen said.
?I think it?s a good idea,? Scott said. ?It would be good for our marriage at a time when there isn?t much support for marriages in our society. During the last forty years most people don?t realize the marriage rate in our country has dropped dramatically.?
?You?re right,? Karen said, ?and more than four out of every ten children are now born out of wedlock. What?s more, fewer people, and especially those under the age of forty, are part of a church community. ?
?If we want the church to be here when our grandchildren are born it sounds like we need to get involved,? Scott responded.
Scott and Karen left my office holding hands.

'American Idol' finale gets record-low audience

John Shearer / AP

Finalists Jessica Sanchez, left, and Phillip Phillips, center, listen as host Ryan Seacrest announces the winner onstage during the "American Idol" finale on Wednesday in Los Angeles.

By Jill Serjeant, Reuters

The "American Idol" finale brought in the lowest TV audience of its 11-year history, with just 21.5 million Americans tuning in to watch Phillip Phillips clinch the title, according to ratings data on Thursday.?

The singing contest, once a TV industry juggernaut for Fox and which attracted more than 30 million viewers for its finale in its 2006 and 2007 heyday, was the most-watched program on U.S. television on Wednesday night.?

But audiences dropped by about 32 percent compared to last year's season finale, Nielsen data showed.?

Fox executives said earlier this month that the audience drop-off this season had been greater than they anticipated and said that several tweaks were in the works to freshen the format for 2013.?

Does Your Direct Sales/Home-based Business Attract Working ...

I was at a women?s networking meeting and networked with some terrific professional working women in my area. This women?s event in particular has only a few direct sales consultants. Most of the attendees were either real estate agents, insurance, salon owners, accountants, retail and other non-direct sales business owners. One conversation stuck with me and inspired this post. When I mentioned to this insurance lady I was in direct sales she said ?how fun, I?ve been to those parties, but I never have time to host them with my busy schedule?.

I was curious because I?ve uttered those same words myself and to be honest, most of the time I am busy, but it?s also an easy way to bow out of having to host a party. So it got me thinking ? does your direct sales/home-based business attract working professionals like the lady I was talking to?

Direct sales are mostly made up of women (around 88%). The flexibility of this business attracts moms, women who want to be stay-at-moms, retirees, newly college graduates, couples ? it?s truly open to everyone. ?But my new friend?s comment got me thinking ? there are some home based opportunities that perhaps aren?t attractive to working professionals?

A party plan comes to mind. Even though it?s part of direct sales and same with networking marketing ? a party plan is built on doing parties. This is common with jewelry, clothes, home decor, Tupperware, Pampered Chef. The difference between direct sales and a party plan is in a party plan business, it?s very hard to sell the high monthly volume required unless you?re doing parties.

There are other ways to supplement to get sales though. You can do online parties, catalog parties, vendor boutiques, one-on-one parties but these are no where as lucrative as doing a home party with a group of women. Parties is the heart of a party plan business!

But professional women are busy just like the lady I was talking to. There?s also the perceived image of being one of those people that go around bugging people they know to host parties for them. To be fair, this isn?t something you can manage because everyone has their own perception. If you?re a party planner, focus on finding people that DO want to host parties for you.

After much discussion, I was able to tell her yes I am in direct sales however my business in particular isn?t built around doing parties and you can easily build online or through coffee meetings, just like she?s already doing in her business.

The biggest challenge facing my pals who are in a party plan is that people are so busy these days. I don?t have one friend who isn?t fully committed to their family?s busy schedule. I?ve turned down multiple home parties because there?s always a conflict with my kids? activities.

Does this mean you?re doomed to fail if you?re in a party plan? Of course not as there are plenty of women hosting jewelry parties, food demonstrations, chocolate parties, jeans, clothes ? but you need to work really hard to find those hostesses because without parties in a party plan ? you will not be in business long!

How about you? Does your home based business attract working professionals?

Julius Genachowski voices support for capped, tiered broadband

julius-genachowski-capped-broadbandFCC honcho Julius Genachowski has come out in favor of usage-based pricing for your broadband. At this year's Cable Show, he said that he supported the sort of usage caps that Comcast adopted last week and hoped that such plans would reduce costs for those who use less internet. Comcast's new pricing structure offers a 300GB monthly cap, after which point it'll charge users $10 for every extra 50GB used. We're not sure how this'll play out, but we suspect anyone with a Netflix or Hulu addiction might feel less than pleased this morning.
