Rare Naked Ladies Crocus Infected with Even Rarer Smutty Fungus

Urocystis colchici Who knew botany and mycology could be so naughty? Naked ladies and smut have come to light in the U.K., but not in the way you might think.

Yes, you can get your minds out of the gutter. We?re talking about the rare plant called the naked ladies crocus (Colchicum autumnale) and the even rarer sooty-black smut fungus (Urocystis colchici). The fungus showed up this month on a single naked ladies crocus at Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire, England, which marked only the fourth time the critically endangered smutty fungus has been observed since 1938. (At least eight other varieties and forms of the fungus can be found around the world, including the U.S., where it affects onions, but the base species has only been observed in the U.K.)

The naked ladies crocus, which itself is listed as a ?near threatened? species in the U.K., gets its name from its propensity to lose its spring leaves before the plant flowers in the autumn, leaving the buds ?naked.? The rotting spring leaves, meanwhile, are the only known host for the sooty-black smut fungus. (Smut fungi, by the way, get their name from the German word schmutz, meaning dirt, which they resemble. There are about 1,000 known species of smut fungi around the world.)

Dave Shorten of the Cotswold Fungus Group, who discovered this month?s fungus, found it growing on a few leaves of a single plant within the 242-hectare park during one of the group?s ?fungus forays,? in which the mycological enthusiasts spend their Sundays documenting the fungi of various parks in the Gloucestershire region. As you can see from the photo accompanying this article, the fungus does look like a small spot of dirt on the leaves of the crocus. According to the U.K. Forestry Commission, each cluster of fungus produces hundreds of thousands of brown-black spores, each 15 to 35 microns in diameter. (A micron is one millionth of a meter.)

This is actually the second sooty-black smut fungus sighting this year but just the 27th time it has ever been recorded in the U.K. The most recent sighting took place on May 10 about 80 kilometers away, in Oxfordshire. Mycologists also observed the fungus in 2002 and 2003 at Moccas Park in Herefordshire. Before that, the last sighting was in 1938.

Shorten says the way the Forestry Commission manages the arboretum makes the site a perfect habitat for a large variety of fungi. The arboretum?s many paths are kept clear, but any wood or leaves that fall on the ground are left to decay naturally. Not only does this provide extra nutrients to the soil, it has also created a perfect breeding ground for birds, insects and fungi. Shorten says he and his predecessors have cataloged 1,271 fungi species at Westonbirt so far, and expects to identify still more in the coming months.

Because of its rarity, the smutty fungus is a legally protected species in the U.K. and is considered to be of ?principal conservation importance.? The Forestry Commission warns that it should not be picked and asks anyone else who observes it in the region to contact the Cotswold Fungus Group.

Are tablets now as good as games consoles | Best Technology ...

Comparing tablet computers to games consoles is fairly tricky because on the surface they are very different products.

Tablets are all-in-one devices designed to let you consume media content, apps and games when you are sitting on your sofa or out and about. Games consoles are dedicated systems aimed at delivering interactive entertainment in a living room environment, with no innate portability built in.

But in recent years the lines between these two types of gadget have blurred, raising the question of whether you could replace a console with a tablet and still satisfy your gaming needs.

So should you get money for your old games console and invest it in a tablet, or is there still space for both devices in your home?

games tablets

Ways to Play

Tablet gaming is all about bite-sized play sessions that can last just a few minutes, with most titles relying on touchscreen or motion controls to let you manage the action.

Consoles, on the other hand, remain the premier platform for longer bouts of gaming, with story-driven single player experiences and online multiplayer experiences which can last for hours at a time. Physical control pads are also the chief form of interaction, although some tablet-style features have begun to appear on certain consoles.

The Wii U, for example, has a primary controller with a large touchscreen display at its centre. Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 can be used with a tablet app called SmartGlass which turns your portable device into another controller. The upcoming PlayStation 4 DualShock 4 control pad will have a built-in touch panel.

Graphic Content

You may think that the biggest difference between tablets and home consoles is in the visual department, since games like Angry Birds use simple 2D graphics while high end console releases deliver rich 3D worlds with hundreds of thousands of polygons on show.

Interestingly, however, most tablet games belie the power of the device on which they are running. The iPad can, for example, support a modified version of the Unreal Engine, which is the same toolkit used to create console franchises like Gears of War.

So the point is not that tablets are less able to generate realistic 3D graphics than consoles, but rather than developers choose not to harness this technology particularly often.

Value Considerations

One reason to choose a tablet rather than a console for gaming is the price of the software. With a console, you not only have to buy the hardware, but you then also pay ?40-?60 for a new game.

Tablets, on the other hand, have access to thousands of games that are free or incredibly cheap, offering hours of fun for relatively minimal investment. So even if a tablet costs more than a console upfront, you will pay less in the long run, particularly when you compare the price of cross-platform games.

Using a tablet is easy ? it is always close to hand ? ?so if you have a console gathering dust, it makes sense to sell it to raise cash for a tablet.

Save Caribbean snorkeling and 'eat a lion,' conservationists say.

Red lionfish have invaded the Caribbean and threaten to devastate the marine ecosystem in a region renowned for diving and snorkeling.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic

Here?s the last thing you?d expect to hear from a conservationist: Eat a lion.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

But that?s exactly what marine biologists are telling people across the Caribbean, where red lionfish ? an invader from the Pacific ? threaten to devastate the marine ecosystems that make the region a renowned destination for SCUBA divers and snorkelers.

Lionfish share little with their big cat namesake other than a fan of fins that resembles a flowing mane and, more importantly, a veracious appetite. The fish gobble up the small native fish that are an integral piece of the food chain and an important link in maintaining dazzling underwater seascapes.?With no natural predators or diseases to keep the population in check, lionfish are now found on nearly every coral reef from New York to Venezuela and they are multiplying fast. Lacking other options, conservationists are pushing a simple message: capture them and cook them. Fishing communities are learning how to catch and process lionfish, which carry a painful dose of venom in their fins. And restaurants and markets are trying to sell the white flakey filets, which taste like snapper or grouper.?

Researchers say divers and fisherman appear to be the only players that can do anything to keep lionfish numbers down. Native predators, such as large groupers and sharks, don?t recognize lionfish as a prey.

"In addition to further research, it seems that the only thing we can do to control lionfish at this point is to keep spearing them," says Serena Hackerott, a graduate student at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. Ms. Hackerott was the lead?author on a 2013 study, published in PLOS One, that found native predators, such as large groupers and sharks, are not controlling lionfish populations to a discernible degree.

"I think that?s our best bet now. I'm not optimistic that natural resistance is going to be enough of an interdiction to control the population."

?Great eating fish?

Unlike other fish that can be caught on a line, lionfish have to be netted or speared, making it a time-consuming catch. Across the Caribbean, conservation groups have worked with local communities to teach them how to capture and then process lionfish, pointing out how to avoid getting pricked by one of the venomous spines.

?My arm was inflamed all the way up to my shoulder,? says Mildred Minaya, a public relations executive for a Dominican bank who, with six office workers, formed a SCUBA diving group that goes out monthly to monitor and control the lionfish population at a marine park outside of the capital, Santo Domingo. ?And I wasn?t even pricked directly. It just nicked me.?

The venomous fins are easily removed, and lionfish are completely safe to eat. Convincing diners of that, however, is another matter.

In Caribbean and Florida restaurants, you can find the fish fried whole, saut?ed, served up in traditional sauces, or even raw in sushi plates.

?It?s a great eating fish. Even in places where it?s not being consumed or offered in a restaurant or at a fish retailer, there?s a lot of personal consumption taking place,? says Lad Akins, director of special projects at REEF, a Key Largo-based marine conservation nonprofit. ?But it?s an expensive fish to collect, and the market place is still learning how to deal with it.?

At a white tablecloth restaurant off of Santo Domingo?s oceanfront boulevard, Jos? Esteves, a ma?tre d? has been trying to push the lionfish in coconut milk sauce for the past year.

?It?s not very well known and people are a little hesitant to order it,? Mr. Esteves says. The restaurant, Vesuvio, sells the dish for $16.50, about $4 less than the more popular snapper plate. ?There was a campaign, ?eat a lion,? that helped a little. The fish has a nice flavor.?

A ?deepening? problem

Even if there?s a permanent market for lionfish filets, humans might never be able to get ahead of the problem. New research is showing that lionfish are found at depths divers can?t reach: A submersible vessel spotted one 1,000 feet down off the Bahamas. The recommended maximum for recreational divers is around 100 feet or a little deeper.

No one is certain how lionfish arrived in the Atlantic and Caribbean, but scientists believe enough of the popular aquarium fish were dumped into the Atlantic to create a breeding population. When they arrived, they left behind the diseases and natural predators that have kept the Pacific population in check and the population has exploded in recent years.

Although relatively small (around 12 to 18 inches on average), they are skilled hunters. Just before striking, lionfish blow a jet of water to stun and position their prey headfirst to more easily eat them, researchers believe.

Divers observe them lazily hovering around the coral, eating anything they can fit in their mouths, from crustaceans to small fish. Among those fish they?re eating are the young of fish key to maintaining the health of coral reefs already under stress thanks to warming sea temperatures and ocean acidification.

Take parrotfish, a group made up of some 90 often brilliantly colored reef fish found throughout the Caribbean. Parrotfish feed on the algae that chokes ? and eventually kills ? coral reefs. They are key in helping reefs rebound from years of die-off, but they?re also a favorite meal for the lionfish. Unfortunately, because lionfish are recent arrivals, young parrotfish don?t recognize them as predators, making them helpless prey.

The seemingly insatiable appetite doesn?t stop there. It also poses a huge risk to Atlantic fisheries as they wolf down the young of fish like snapper and grouper.

Mr. Akins says evolution will eventually find a way to control the lionfish population. What happens in the meantime is the question.

?What a balance will look like is a complete unknown and the fear is that the picture once that balance is formed may be pretty dire,? he says. ?The species we rely on commercially could be dramatically impacted to the point of potential collapse.?

Google blasted for persisting online drug ads

JACKSON, Miss.? -- Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood says Google (GOOG) is still selling Internet ads promoting illegally sold drugs, and that the technology giant refuses to drop those websites from search results.

The Democrat demanded Thursday that Google CEO Larry Page attend a meeting of the National Association of Attorneys General on June 18 in Boston to answer questions, saying earlier responses were "evasive" and "overly technical." Hood, who is one of three co-chairs of the association's intellectual property committee, said that if Google doesn't cooperate, he's going to recommend forcing the company to produce documents.

"I hope the CEO is not aware of what Google has been doing," Hood said at a news conference.

Company spokesman Aaron Stein said Google takes safety "very seriously" and has explained to Hood how it fights illegal pharmacies.

"In the last two years, we've removed more than 3 million ads for illegal pharmacies," he wrote in an email. "We continue to work on this issue with industry partners and groups like the Center for Safe Internet Pharmacies."

The Mountain View-based company also said it has responded to more than 16 million requests in the last month alone for copyrighted material to be removed.

Stein didn't respond to further questions about whether Page would attend the meeting.

Google paid $500 million to the federal government in 2011 to settle claims over ads sold to pharmacies that were illegally shipping drugs into the United States.

Hood said it's wrong for Google to auto-complete searches helping someone to buy drugs without a prescription or illegally download music and movies. He reiterated those points in a May 21 letter to Page, noting that Google has blocked search results for child pornography and won't auto-complete phrases such as "free child porn."

Hood wrote that providing search results or auto-complete for a phrase such as "buy oxycodone online no prescription" similarly promotes illegal activity and should be blocked. He also wants Google to remove content from its YouTube unit that instructs people on how to buy drugs without a prescription, saying that Google is making money from ads that appear alongside those and every other YouTube video.

Hood warned that Google could be prosecuted as an accessory before the fact for illegal drug sales. He also said state nuisance laws could apply.

"We would hold a skating rink responsible if this activity was going on around it," he said.

Hood said officials have been able to get credit card companies to cut off payments to online retailers they consider illegal and have improved communications between law enforcement and Facebook.

"Google ought to do like other companies involved," Hood said.

Hood said a lawsuit against Google could be difficult, but he noted that attorneys general worked together to sue tobacco companies. Mississippi was a leader in that effort, but the suit and the money it brought for plaintiffs' attorneys brought a furious backlash from state Republicans. They continue to say that Democratic attorney generals give lucrative cases to their political allies, who in turn give campaign contributions back to the official.?

Turkey frees bird accused of spying for Israel ? Not the Onion

Turkish authorities detained a bird on suspicion it was spying for Israel, but freed it after X-rays showed it was not embedded with surveillance equipment, newspapers said on Friday.

HawkThe kestrel aroused suspicion because of a metal ring on its foot carrying the words ?24311 Tel Avivunia Israel,? prompting residents in the village of Altinayva to hand it over to the local governor.

The bird was put in an X-ray machine at a university hospital to check for microchips or bugging devices, according to the Milliyet newspaper, which carried a front-page image of the radiogram with the title ?Israeli agent?.

Team examining Gulf shipwreck finds 2 other wrecks

NOAA Okeanos Explorer Program via AP

The Little Hercules remotely operated vehicle and an anchor inside the hull of a copper-sheathed shipwreck in the Gulf of Mexico about 170 miles off Galveston, Texas.

By Michael Graczyk, Associated Press

Marine archaeologists made a thrilling discovery this week while examining a well-preserved shipwreck deep in the Gulf of Mexico ? two other sunken vessels that likely went down with it during an early 19th century storm.?

Much isn't known about the ships, including the flag or flags they sailed under and the year they sank about 170 miles southeast of Galveston. They came to rest 4,363 feet, or nearly three-quarters of a mile, below the surface, making them the deepest Gulf or North American shipwrecks to have been systematically investigated by archaeologists, the researchers said.?

"What you're going to see and hear I hope will blow your mind. Because it has ours," lead investigator Fritz Hanselmann told reporters at a Thursday news conference in which the team revealed its initial findings.?

"We went out with a lot of questions and we returned with even more. The big question we're all asking is: What is the shipwreck? And the answer is we still don't know," said Hanselmann, a researcher from Texas State University in San Marcos' Meadows Center for Water and the Environment.?

NOAA Okeanos Explorer Program via AP

Artifiacts including ceramic plates, platters, bowls plus glass liquor, wine, medicine, and food storage bottles of many shapes and colors found inside a wrecked ship's hull, in the Gulf of Mexico about 170 from Galveston, Texas.

During eight days of exploration that ended Wednesday, the scientists used remote-controlled machines to recover more than 60 artifacts from the initial shipwreck site, including musket parts, ceramic cups and dishes, liquor bottles, clothing and even a toothbrush. The artifacts, including china from Britain, ceramics from Mexico and at least one musket from Canada, will help researchers determine the ships' histories, Hanselmann said.?

"Nationalities, cultures, all collide in these shipwrecks. We hope to return in the future next year with more work," he said.?
Although they weren't allowed to retrieve artifacts from the two new sites under the terms of their agreement to examine the initial one, the researchers took thousands of photos and closely examined the wreckage of all three ships, which came to rest within five miles of one another.?

Two of the ships were carrying similar items, and researchers believe they may have been privateers, or armed ships that governments would hire, Hanselmann said. The third vessel was loaded with hides and large bricks of tallow, suggesting that it may have been a prize seized by the privateers.?

The artifacts are headed for preservation work at a Texas A&M University research facility.?

"For now, there's lot of conjecture, lots of hypotheses," said Jim Delgado, the director of the Maritime Heritage Program for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "We may have answered some questions, but we have a large number of new questions. But that's archaeology."?

Delgado said the ships likely went down during the first two decades of the 1800s, which was a time of great upheaval in the Gulf region and in the New World, in general.?

"Empires were falling, Spain was losing its grip, France was selling what it has, Mexico becomes independent, Texas independent, Latin America becomes independent and the U.S. is beginning to make a foothold in the Gulf," he said. "So these wrecks are all tied to that, we are sure."?

It's likely each ship was carrying 50 to 60 men and that none of them survived. Among the wreckage were telescopes and other navigational tools that survivors likely wouldn't have left behind if they could have helped it, the researchers said.?

Delgado said the ship the team set out to examine was armed with six cannons and may have had two masts. Undersea images show the outline of a copper-clad, 84-foot-long by 26-foot-wide wooden hull.?

A Shell Oil Co. survey crew notified federal Interior Department officials in 2011 that its sonar had detected something resembling a shipwreck. It also detected some other material.?

"Like a medical ultrasound, interpreting can be difficult," said Jack Irion, of the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. "This case is the same way. You can't tell if it's an historic shipwreck or just a pile of stuff."?

A year later, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration vessel examining seafloor habitat and naturally occurring gas seepage used a remote-controlled vehicle to briefly examine the wreck. Besides determining the ship's dimensions, the examination showed it to be undisturbed and likely from the early 19th century.?

That ship has been dubbed the "Monterrey Shipwreck," adopting the name Shell had proposed for its development site.?

Researchers have examined several other historically significant Gulf shipwrecks in recent years.?

In 1995, after a more than decade-long hunt, Texas Historical Commission archaeologists found one of famed French explorer La Salle's vessels in a coastal bay between Galveston and Corpus Christi. The remains of the LaBelle, which went down in a storm in 1686, have been recovered and are undergoing an unusual freeze-drying treatment at Texas A&M. The ship is to be reconstructed next year and become a centerpiece of the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin.?

Earlier this year, researchers used special 3-D imagery to map the remains of the USS Hatteras, which was the only U.S. Navy ship sunk in the Gulf of Mexico in combat during the Civil War. The 210-foot iron-hulled ship went down in 1863 about 20 miles off the Galveston coast during a run-in with a Confederate raiding vessel. Researchers believe that heavy storms in recent years shifted the sea floor sand and exposed the wreckage, which rests 57 feet below the surface.?

Baidu's Q3 outlook reassures amid rising competition

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Baidu Inc forecast third-quarter revenue well beyond investors' expectations, dispelling fears that growing competition in its home Chinese market was sapping market share and propelling its stock 11 percent higher.

The company, China's largest Internet search engine, foresees revenue of $1.422 billion to $1.46 billion this quarter, surpassing the $1.35 billion expected by Wall Street.

Rival Qihoo 360 Technology Co , which runs China's most popular app store, has been eating away at Baidu's search engine market share since bursting onto the scene last year, increasing marketing expenditure and traffic acquisition costs for the still-dominant firm.

Qihoo now holds 15 percent of the market and is in talks to acquire Sohu.com Inc's Sogou search engine. A successful deal would give it almost one quarter of China's search market.

The company on Wednesday posted revenue of $1.23 billion in the second quarter. Analysts had on average expected the company to record revenue of $1.2 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Online marketing revenue climbed 38.3 percent to $1.228 billion.

Its stock rose to $126.20 in after-hours trade, after closing at $113.37 on the Nasdaq.

John Morillo, a 47-year-old Canadian man, apologized today for causing an international incident last night when he drank eight beers and then swam across the Detroit River, just to prove to his friends he could.

Speaking to the Windsor Star after being released from jail this morning, Morillo said in retrospect it was "really stupid" of him to drunkenly swim across the river, but not without adding that he wanted his incredulous buddies to know he'd pulled it off (emphasis ours):

If I?m going to be in the paper, I?d at least like them to say I actually made it, even though I got in trouble and everything. I gotta pay fines and stuff. But I don?t want it to sound like I didn?t make it, because then my buddies are going to say 'ha, ha, you didn?t make it.' Because that was the whole thing, to show them I could do it.

Morillo's stunt launched a joint search mission between the Canadian and U.S. coast guards when his neighbor called the police after losing sight of him in the water. Rescue efforts included three boats and a helicopter. Morillo, who calls himself a "strong swimmer," had made it across the river and was on his way back when the U.S. Coast Guard found him floating on the Canadian side at around 1 AM, two hours after he'd initially entered the water.

Windsor authorities have banned Morillo from all waterfront city property and will fine him $5,000 for swimming in a shipping channel. Exacerbating everything, Morillo, who was ultimately charged with being intoxicated in public, says his mom is very mad at him. "She just hung up on me," Morillo told the Star. "She said 'you?re just so stupid.'"

How The U.S. National Debt Has Taken on a Life of Its Own

Politicians and the mainstream will certainly love this?

Last week, Moody?s Investors Service changed its outlook on the?U.S. national debt?from negative to stable. (Source: Reuters, July 18, 2013.)

Despite the credit reporting agency?s ?upgrade? on U.S. national debt, my opinion remains the same: the U.S. national debt has taken on a life of its own, growing like a bad cancer with no cure in sight.

Consider this:

In June of this year, the U.S. government registered a surplus of $117 billion after a budget deficit of $139 billion in May. On the surface that sounds great. But look a little closer, and we see that interest paid on the U.S. national debt for the month of June was $93.03 billion.

In the fiscal year so far (October 2012 to June 2013), the U.S. government has paid $345.26 billion as interest. For the full fiscal year (ending October 31, 2013), interest rate expense on the U.S. national debt is expected to reach $420.61 billion. (Source: Department of the Treasury, Financial Management Service, July 11, 2013.)

That?s almost half a trillion per year on interest payments only! And we must remember the Federal Reserve is keeping interest rates artificially low. If interest rates doubled (which is not a long-shot concept, considering that even if rates did double from here, they would still be below the 30-year average), the government interest rate payments could read $1.0 trillion a year!

Looking at the U.S. national debt as a percentage of our gross domestic product (GDP), it stood at 105.07% at the end of the first quarter of this year. (Source: Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis web site, last accessed July 19, 2013.)

Comparatively, in the first quarter of 2012, the U.S. national debt-to-GDP ratio was 100.8%. But I thought the Obama Administration said it would cut back on our debt?

Looking back further, in the early 1980s, the ratio of U.S. national debt to GDP stood just above 30%. With the national debt close to reaching $17.0 trillion, looking at the nominal value, the U.S. is the most indebted nation in the global economy.

But this is just one piece of the puzzle. Failing cities, due to staggering budget deficits and troubled states, can cause U.S. national debt to increase even more. We heard Friday morning that Detroit filed for bankruptcy, leaving more than 100,000 creditors astray. (Source:?Detroit Free Press, July 18, 2013.) The federal government bailed out General Motors Company (NYSE/GM); will it bail out ?Motor City??

Dear reader, U.S. national debt has skyrocketed?that?s not a hidden fact anymore. And this is a major concern for the sovereignty of this nation. Our credit rating is still top-notch, but I beg to ask the question: how long can it last?

When the government incurs a budget deficit, it must come up with money to pay for its expenses. The government can pay its bills by either increasing the national debt (selling bonds bought by a Federal Reserve that just prints money and gives it to the government) or by raising taxes. But raising taxes is not popular with politicians because such an action would threaten their chances of getting re-elected.

Higher interest rates are on their way. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury has risen from 1.50% one year ago to 2.47% today. Getting away from annual trillion-dollar deficits will be difficult for the government, as what it saves on budget cuts will be compromised by higher interest payments and possible bailouts for cities and states.

Michael?s Personal Notes:

Wherever we turn to in the media today, we hear or read the?U.S. economy?is witnessing a period of economic growth. The media and politicians cite an improving luxury car market, rising real estate prices, and jobs growth.

On the contrary, and as I have been writing in these pages for months (if not years), economic growth in the U.S. economy can only occur when consumers are optimistic and feel better about spending; the opposite of that is happening right now.

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, sales at restaurants and bars in the U.S. economy plummeted the most in June since February of 2008. Sales at restaurants and bars also witnessed a decline in May. (Source:?Wall Street Journal, July 15, 2013.)

In times of economic growth, consumers go out and spend money. As purchases at restaurants and bars are discretionary, this tells me consumers in the U.S. either don?t really want to spend or don?t have much to spend.

U.S. companies are also painting a picture of slowing consumer spending. Consider General Electric Company (NYSE/GE), one of the pioneer companies in the U.S. economy. General Electric (GE) reported second-quarter earnings that beat estimates, but the company?s revenues declined two percent from the same period a year ago. (Source: General Electric Company web site, July 19, 2013.) In times of economic growth, you want to see earnings increasing with revenues.

Why aren?t the consumers in the U.S. economy spending?

Wages of employees in the U.S. economy in real terms, adjusted for inflation, are declining. In June, real average weekly earnings for all employees in the U.S. declined 0.1% from May. (Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics, July 16, 2013.)

The jobs market in the U.S. economy is still weak. The ?official? figures do not include people who have given up looking for work and those who want full-time work but can only get part-time work. And the majority of job creation since the credit crisis hit has been in the low-wage-paying sectors.

Troubles for the average joe just don?t end here. Right now, we are seeing rising oil prices?and this will put more pressure on consumer spending in the U.S.

So what?s the truth of the matter? There is no real economic growth in the U.S. economy.

FOREX-Dollar edges higher, Aussie sags on China growth worries

Wed Jul 24, 2013 5:52am BST

* Aussie slips as HSBC's China flash PMI hits 11-mth low

* Dollar index firmer, inches away from 1-month low

* Market positioning may weigh on greenback -trader

By Masayuki Kitano

SINGAPORE, July 24 (Reuters) - The dollar inched higher versus a basket of currencies and the Australian dollar slipped on Wednesday, as fresh signs of a slowdown in China's manufacturing sector weighed on broader risk sentiment.

The Australian dollar had set a one-month high earlier in the session as key measures of underlying inflation in Australia were taken as reducing chances for a cut in interest rates next month, though the data was mixed and views in the market on the likelihood of a rate cut remained split.

The Aussie, however, declined after the flash HSBC/Markit Purchasing Managers' Index came in at an 11-month low in July, while the U.S. dollar pushed broadly higher.

"Risk appetite is likely to be muted and the dollar should benefit as a result," said Roy Teo, FX strategist for ABN AMRO Bank, referring to the weakness in the gauge of Chinese manufacturing activity.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback's value against a basket of currencies, rose 0.2 percent to 82.093 , pulling away from a one-month low of 81.926 set on Tuesday.

The Australian dollar slipped 0.2 percent to $0.9267 , down from an intraday high of $0.9320, the Australian dollar's strongest level since late June.

The Aussie dollar is sensitive to economic data out of China, which is Australia's biggest export market.

The U.S. dollar took a breather from a recent bout of weakness, gaining 0.2 percent against the yen to about 99.63 yen . The euro eased 0.1 percent to $1.3211, down from a one-month high of $1.3239 that had been touched on Tuesday.

Still, some market players were cautious on the near-term outlook for the greenback, which has declined after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke recently stressed the Fed will keep rates low for a long time to come, even if it started to scale back its asset purchases.

Recent price action suggests that market players are still long the dollar and such positioning could weigh on the greenback, said Hiroshi Maeba, head of FX trading Japan for UBS in Tokyo.

Prince William's wife Kate in hospital for royal birth

By Michael Holden

LONDON (Reuters) - Prince William's wife Kate was in labour at the St. Mary's Hospital in west London on Monday as public anticipation over the birth of their first child, who will be third in line to the throne, reached fever pitch.

The royal couple, officially known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, travelled by car to the hospital before dawn and entered through a back door to avoid media camped outside the main entrance.

Kate is due to give birth to the child at the private Lindo wing of the hospital, where her husband was born to the late Princess Diana in 1982.

Kate and William, both aged 31, met when they were students at St. Andrews University and were married in April 2011 in a spectacular wedding broadcast around the world.

The royal birth has provoked a similar frenzy, with national and international media keeping up a deluge of speculative reports throughout Monday from outside the hospital.

The birth will be announced in the traditional way with an envelope containing the baby's details taken from the hospital to Buckingham Palace, where the news will be posted on a board outside the main gates.

"Things are progressing as normal. It wasn't an emergency," a royal spokeswoman said.

Prime Minister David Cameron said it was an exciting time.

"Best wishes to them, a very exciting occasion and the whole country is excited with them. Everyone's hoping for the best," Cameron told the BBC.

Crowds were also gathered outside Buckingham Palace.

"We love anything and everything about the royal family. As Canadians we really respect the queen," said Rosch Neboulsi, a tourist from Alberta, Canada, who was standing outside the palace gates with his family.

The baby will arrive at a time when the royal family is riding a wave of popularity. An Ipsos Mori poll last week showed 77 percent of Britons were in favour of remaining a monarchy over a republic, close to its best-ever level of support.

The event seals a remarkable comeback for the House of Windsor, regenerated by the younger royals. The death of Princess Diana in 1997 had led to a dip in popularity amid accusations it was out of touch with modern Britain.

But last year's celebrations of the Queen's 60th year on the throne showed the affection with which she is held by most of the population, despite a small but vocal Republican movement.

The royal birth might also help raise the national mood, battered by economic problems, unemployment, cuts in public spending and a rising gap between rich and poor.

The festive atmosphere has been heightened by a heatwave and a string of British sporting victories in tennis, rugby, cricket and cycling.

Royal supporter Terry Hutt, 78, who has waited outside the hospital for 12 days, acknowledged his joy over the imminent arrival.

"We've got a lovely married couple and baby will make three and they will be a family. It means everything to me, girl or boy, as they will be king or queen one day," said Hutt, dressed in a suit and hat emblazoned with Union Jacks.

NATURAL BIRTH

The royal baby was also dominating headlines globally.

"You'd think it was the American royal family producing this baby," said Robert Lacey, royal historian and biographer.

Royal sources said Kate has planned a natural birth with William, a Royal Air Force search and rescue helicopter pilot, to be at her side. The royal couple do not know the baby's sex.

The child will be third in line to the throne regardless of gender behind grandfather Prince Charles and father William after Britain and 15 other Commonwealth nations agreed to change royal succession rules so males no longer take precedence.

"Fundamentally all of them have agreed in writing to this," Cameron said. "It would not be a problem."

Royal officials have confirmed the baby will be known as His or Her Highness Prince or Princess (name) of Cambridge. The name may not be announced immediately - it took more than a week for an announcement of William's name.

Bookmakers have a girl as the favourite with preferred names Alexandra, Victoria, Charlotte and Diana, in honour of William's mother, who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997. George is the favourite boy's name followed by James.

The Queen will be among the first to be informed of the arrival of the baby, who will be delivered by Marcus Setchell, the queen's former gynaecologist.

After the birth, commentators said Kate was expected to spend time at her parents' house in the village of Bucklebury, about 50 miles (80 km) west of London, before eventually moving to the Kensington Palace, William's childhood home.

Kate, whose ancestors were coal miners, has become hugely popular and a fashion icon, with her attire scrutinised and copied every time she steps out in public.

Scrutiny of Princess Diana's life and her death while pursued by paparazzi instilled a deep distaste for the media in William and he has done his best to shield his wife from such attention.

Analysts said any economic impact from the royal birth would be positive but limited, with no public holiday and purchases of souvenirs or alcohol to toast the baby likely to be the main boosts.

"Having said that there is a lot of international interest in the royal baby with high foreign media coverage, which does help to advertise the UK globally," said Howard Archer, economist from IHS Global Insight.

Not all Britons, however, were giddy over the event.

The website of the Guardian newspaper offered readers the option of clicking on a "Republican" prompt, removing all references to the royal birth from its pages.

The Republic movement said on its website that every child should be born equal.

"How can that be when one child is born above all others, destined for high office not because of merit or popular choice but because of their parents?" it said.

Apple developer site taken down after hacker attempts access

?

Developers look over new apps being displayed on iPads at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference Monday, June 10, 2013 in San Francisco. Apple's developer site has been taken down after an attempted hack.

Photograph by: Eric Risberg , AP Photo

Apple Inc.'s developer site is unavailable for software engineers after a hacker tried to steal personal information, the company said.

Apple took the website, used by programmers who write applications for iPhones, Macs and other products, off-line on July 18 in order to fix the issue, the company said in an online statement.

Developers who use the site for software downloads, documentation and engineering information could face delays in introducing their own products. Some of the information is encrypted and Apple hasn't been able to rule out whether names, mailing addresses or email addresses may have been accessed, the company said.

"Having your partners get breached in a hacking attempt is a serious loss of trust for developers," Frank Yu, Beijing-based chief executive officer of app developer Kwestr, said in an email today. "Apple has responded well to allay those fears."

Apple said it would extend memberships for any users if their accounts were due to expire while the website is off-line. The Cupertino, California-based maker of iPhones and iPads said to prevent a security threat like this from happening again it's "completely overhauling" its developer systems.

"This event shows that our private information and our developer account may be leaked," said Cui Tong, a Beijing- based iOS developer who works for photo-sharing app PaPa. "I hope Apple will spend more time and resources on security to protect our private information."

The Pentagon cleared Apple devices for use on its networks in May, approving the use of government-issued Apple products running a version of the iOS 6 mobile platform. Some Samsung Electronics Co. and BlackBerry products are also approved for military sales.

The approval demonstrates Apple's "commitment to deliver a secure platform to our enterprise and government customers," the company said at the time.

Turkish security researcher claims responsibility for Apple dev center hack

Turkish security researcher claims responsibility for Apple dev center hack

When Apple's developer portal went down Thursday, there were a lot of questions left unanswered. One of the more notable was, just who was responsible for this attack on the premiere destinations for iOS and OS X developers? Turkish security researcher Ibrahim Balic is claiming he was behind the hack, but it wasn't his intention to cause any harm. Balic says that he reported the vulnerability to the proper Cupertino authorities but, for whatever reason, his efforts didn't end there. He actually exploited the security flaw he had discovered, which gave him access to the names, email and mailing addresses associated with developer accounts. In total he discovered 13 bugs, at least one of which he demonstrated in a YouTube video, that appeared to show him accessing a list of developer names and user IDs. That clip has since been pulled, as Balic was concerned about some of the information displayed on the screen. However, in a tweet he asserted that sharing the confidential data was essential to prove his point about the severity of the vulnerability.

The researcher does insist that his actions were legal and ethical. He told the Guardian that he only accessed developer account data in an effort to discover just how deep the rabbit hole went as part of a penetration test and will delete all of the data he collected. He claims that immediately after reporting his findings to Cupertino the dev center was shutdown, but that he never received a follow up from someone at the company. Instead there was simply an announcement of an attack, without any correspondance between Balic and Apple. So far Apple has not responded to our request for comment, and has neither confirmed nor denied Balic's account of events.

Sex offender due in court after bodies of 3 women found in Cleveland suburb

A Cleveland suburb is on edge after police found the bodies of three women who may have been murdered by a serial killer, NBC's Michelle Franzen reports.

By Gil Aegerter, Andrew Rafferty and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

A registered sex offender was expected to be charged Monday after the discovery of three female bodies wrapped in garbage bags in an impoverished Cleveland suburb.

The search for more possible victims was called off late Sunday as investigators dealt with the city's third horrific case involving murdered women in four years.

AP

Michael Madison, 35, is due to appear in court on Monday.

Michael Madison, 35, a registered sex offender, will appear in court Monday and is expected to be charged in connection with the deaths of the three black women whose bodies were discovered Friday and Saturday in the town of East Cleveland, NBC station WKYC reported.

Madison has confessed to at least one murder, WKYC reported.

East Cleveland Mayor Gary Norton told The Plain Dealer newspaper that Madison indicated in police interviews that he might have been influenced by Anthony Sowell, who is on death row for killing 11 women ages 24 to 52 at his home in the city.

Sowell, who is also a convicted sex offender, was captured in 2009. In court papers, prosecutors described him as "the worst offender in the history of Cuyahoga County and arguably the State of Ohio."

Two months ago, Cleveland was shocked by the escapes of Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight. Ariel Castro was charged with 977 counts in connection with the abduction and rape of the women, who were held captive in his Seymour Avenue home for more than a decade.

Police arrested Madison on Friday, hours after investigators found a woman's body in a garage. Two more bodies were discovered Saturday ? one in a backyard and the other in the basement of a vacant house.

Authorities continued looking for more possible victims into Sunday night before calling off the search, East Cleveland Police Chief Ralph Spotts told reporters.

"We officially found nothing," he said. "We will not pick up the search again."

During the search, a cadaver dog led investigators to a lot near the area where the three others bodies were found, according WKYC. Other cadaver dogs also hinted at the same area.

No identities were released, but all three victims were believed to have been killed in the past six to 10 days. The bodies were found about 100 to 200 yards apart.

Nathenia Crosby, 48, said Madison was a neighbor who concerned her because of his interest in her daughter.

"It's very scary, especially when he used to be talking to my daughter," she told the Associated Press. "But I told him he was too old to be talking to my daughter, because she was only 19. When I found out how old he was, I said, 'You need to move on; she's too young.'"

Teenager Daniqwa Martin told the Associated Press she smelled an odor near the house Tuesday but ignored it, thinking it was a dead animal. Martin, 16, said Madison had offered her a ride in the past but she always declined.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiners Office told reporters it may take up to several days as they work to?identify the?dead women because the bodies are in an advanced state of decomposition, WKYC said.

A news conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET Monday.

NBC News' M. Alex Johnson and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
