Huntsman: No regrets about Iowa (Politico)

Jon Huntsman said Monday he has no regrets about skipping Iowa and expects his decision to focus on New Hampshire will give him the best shot at the nomination.

Appearing by satellite hookup from Manchester, N.H., Huntsman told CNN?s Soledad O?Brien he thinks once the attention turns to the first-in-the-nation primary, he?ll be able to shake up the Republican contest.

Huntsman: No regrets on Iowa

?No regrets, Soledad,? he said. ?You?ve got to lay out your assets and resources in states where you think you can do the best. And listen, the rap on me is, ?That Huntsman guy, he can go on and he can win the general election ? can he do well in some of the early primary states?? This is a state to be sure that likes to reward underdogs. I?m an underdog in this race. And if you get out and work hard, this is a level playing field.?

Next week, he said, all the work he has done in the state is ?going to pay off.?

?I feel pretty good about having come from the margin of error. We came into this state as a complete asterisk, at zero, and now we?re bumping into the teens,? Huntsman said. ?And with the unpredictable nature of the race so far, I think we are positioned pretty well.?

While many pundits have questioned his decision to ignore Iowa, Huntsman - who?s lagging in the national polls - said he expects to prove them wrong. Once the spotlight hits New Hampshire, he said, he?ll make a splash in the race.

?That?s about to change in about 48 hours, and then the big bright light is going to be here on New Hampshire,? Huntsman said. ?And in true fashion, New Hampshire always tends to upend conventional wisdom.?

New Hampshire residents, he said, don?t like to be told who to vote for.

?They don?t want the establishment teeing up somebody that they feel they have to vote for,? Huntsman said. ?They want the candidates to earn it. So we?re proving the point, I think in real time here, that politics and successful politics must be earned on the ground.?

An ?interesting thing? will happen in a week when New Hampshire goes to the ballot box, he said.

?All the drama and all the theater of the preseason is going to be behind them and they?re going to look at that ballot box and they?re going to say, ?I actually have to cast a vote for somebody who can be president of the United States of America,?? he said. ?There aren?t a whole lot of people remaining who can actually be president of the United States of America.?

Once they consider their options, Huntsman said, he believes the voters in New Hampshire ?are going to render a very sensible judgment, which will likely transform the landscape of this race.?
