Study on the Patient Delay among Breast Cancer Patients in ...

[Abstract]

Objectives1 To describe the patient delay situation?ofbreast cancer patients in Sichuan province;2 To explore the relationship between the elapsed time from symptom discovery to the initial seeking for a medical consultation of breast cancer patients and the clinical stage of breast cancer;3 To identify the determinative factors for patient delay of breast cancer patients in Sichuan province.MethodsFrom September 2006 to January 2007, 283 breast cancer patients were investigated to identity the elapsed time from symptom discovery to the initial seeking for a medical consultation as well as the determinative factors for patient delay. Data were analyzed by using SPSS 11.5.Results1 The elapsed time from symptom discovery to the initial seeking for a medical consultation ranged from 0.2 day to 900 days, the median was 50 days;2 The patient delay rate was 35.7% , the ratio of delaying durations of 90days?, 180days?, 366days?was 12.0%, 12.0%, and 11.7% respectively;3 There was a positive correlation between the elapsed time and the clinical stage of breast cancer (r=0.587, P=0.000);4 The determinative factors for patient delay of breast cancer patients in Sichuan province were breast cancer symptom knowledge (standard?=-0.752, P =0.000, OR=0.716, 95%CI=0.637-0.804), external health locus of control(standard?=0.458, P=0.000, OR=1.173, 95%CI=1.087 -1.266), breast self-examination or health examination (standard?=-0.436, P =0.015,OR=0.065, 95%CI =0.007-0.590), perceived health management competence (standard?=-0.343, P =0.000, OR=0.873, 95%CI=0.808- 0.944), family support (standard?=-0.260, P =0.013, OR=0.911, 95%CI=0.847-0.981), pain (standard?=-0.252, P =0.023, OR=0.191,95%CI=0.046-0.792), and age(standard?=0.178, P =0.049, OR=1.028, 95%CI=1.000-1.058)?Conclusions1 The patient delay of breast cancer patients in Sichuan province is comparatively common. The elapsed time from symptom discovery to the initial seeking for a medical consultation of 35.7% patients is over 3 months.2 There is a positive correlation between the elapsed time and the clinical stage of breast cancer. The longer the elapsed time, the more advanced the clinical stage of the breast cancer.3 The significant determinative factors for patient delay of breast cancer patients in Sichuan province are breast cancer symptom knowledge, external health locus of control, breast self-examination or health examination, perceived health management competence, family support, pain, and age.
